Escono finalmente i racconti napoletani di Carlo Nazzaro, maestro di giornalismo e raffinato scrittore, appartenente alla grande tradizione dei direttori di giornali insieme con Giovanni Ansaldo e Mario Missiroli. Collaboratore del Corriere, Nazzaro diresse il Roma fino al 1943. Nel 1950 fu chiamato da Giovanni Ansaldo a condividere la direzione del Mattino. I tre libri in cofanetto, Napoli sempreviva, Vico Fantasia e Napoletani col don, raccolgono i suoi elzeviri, recuperati con amore di figlio da Beniamino Nazzaro fra le annate storiche del Mattino. La sua prosa piaceva molto a Dino Buzzati, che scrisse: Vi metterà la voglia di prendere il treno, o l'auto, o l'aereo, di andare laggiù anche se ci siete già stati cento volte, per scoprire di Napoli qualche cosa che non avevamo capito. Nato in Irpinia nel 1887, Nazzaro arrivò a Napoli giovanissimo. Con i suoi amici Salvatore Di Giacomo ed Ernesto Murolo, Nazzaro visse la belle époque cittadina, quando ancora si incrociavano le lame nei duelli e trionfavano le sciantose. Era la Napoli di Matilde Serao: a tarda sera, il giovane Nazzaro alzava gli occhi verso una finestra che brillava nel buio: Donna Matilde lavora ancora, diceva. Diventato direttore del Roma, fece del suo giornale un cenacolo: ogni personaggio del mondo delle lettere e delle arti in visita a Napoli andava immancabilmente a salutarlo in redazione. E lui non perdeva occasione per regalare ai suoi figli e fratelli un piacevole momento culturale. Per Mascagni, Nazzaro fece piazzare un pianoforte in tipografia: divertito dalla trovata, il musicista attaccò Cavalleria Rusticana, fra la delizia di impaginatori, linotipisti e redattori. Andò a trovarlo Pirandello con Marta Abba, che recitò due brani di Così è se vi pare. Ojetti, che aveva una predilezione per lui, diceva che molte delle sue Cose viste erano viste con lo sguardo di Nazzaro. Nel 1950, diresse il Mattino insieme con Giovanni Ansaldo. In quegli anni, la sede del quotidiano napoletano era nell'Angiporto Galleria, in un edificio che ospitava anche due case di appuntamento. Quando Nazzaro e Ansaldo scendevano per le scale, le puttane li salutavano con riguardo: Buonasera direttore. I due ricambiavano il saluto, accennando a togliersi il cappello.
