Presumed First Edition Thus. 1858 - two volumes bound as one (we are unsure of this date as although the title-pages of the two volumes state 1856-8, the introductory remarks in volume 1 and a date at the end of this volume carry 1854 and the date at the end of the catalogue in the second volume is given as 1858, and the spine of the book states 1854-58). xxx,451pp. including indices of native, generic and specific names; pps. 452-752 (including a title-page) followed by v, iv and ix of indices. Thomas Horsfield (1773-1859) was an American physician and naturalist who worked extensively in Indonesia. After leaving Java in 1819 due to ill health he became a keeper of the museum of the East India Company on Leadenhall Street, London, working under Charles Wilkins. He stayed in this position, later as a curator, until his death on July 24, 1859. For sale are the first two volumes of his catalogue of the birds in the museum of the East-India Company (we do not know if further volumes were issued). The book is bound in contemporary dark purple cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and slight fading to the spine. The bottom corners and spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the spine ends. The front spine edge has a split in the cloth of about 3 1/2" that has been partially home-repaired. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the first and last few pages of each volume, including the title pages. Many of the pages remain unseparated along the top edge. There is a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper but no inscription. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.…
