John Henry Newman's Essay in Aid of a Grammar of Assent is a masterpiece of religious epistemology, providing astute descriptive analysis of how the human mind actually works in addressing itself to reality, as well as a novel prescriptive vocabulary for fruitfully considering the assent involved in Christian belief. While it is rightly numbered among the most important of Newman's writings, the Grammar is a difficult and complex work, combining rigorous theoretical argumentation with deeply personal reflection. In this Critical Guide to Newman's Grammar, editors Frederick D. Aquino and Matthew Levering have assembled ten original essays on the work's historical background and key themes and ideas. Topics discussed include Newman's distinctions of real and notional apprehension and real and notional assent, his treatment of the role of conscience and dogmatic propositions in religious reasoning, his understanding of faith and rationality, his notions of the illative sense and the role of inference in intellectual inquiry, and his view of the relation between natural and revealed religion. The contributing authors are an international array of noteworthy Newman scholars, including Frederick D. Aquino, Christopher Cimorelli, John F. Crosby, Logan Paul Gage, Stephen Grimm, Thomas S. Hibbs, Lorraine Keller, Andrew Meszaros, Francesca Aran Murphy, Cyril O'Regan, and Geertjan Zuijdwegt. This collection of essays presents the riches of the Grammar in conversation with contemporary philosophical and theological concerns, guiding readers into its central topics while also advancing its scholarly reception.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Is Christian belief rationally acceptable? Must every Christian defend his or her beliefs with exhaustively logical arguments, or is belief solely a matter of faith rather than logical argument? In Communities of Informed Judgment, Frederick D. Aquino offers an alternative route, showing how John Henry Newman's notion of the illative sense of reasoning paves a way for constructing a fresh account of the rationality of Christian belief. Moving beyond both modern and postmodern accounts of rationality, Aquino constructs a proposal of informed judgment, blending Newman's notion of the illative sense of reasoning with recent work in social and virtue epistemology. The first part of the book focuses primarily on Newman's treatment of the illative sense in the Grammar of Assent, with the University Sermons as a backdrop. The second part addresses the problem of securing a common standard of justification. Though Newman acknowledges the social and communal facets of judgment, his focus is primarily on the personal dimension. Aquino develops Newman's insights into a social epistemology of informed judgment, transposing the problem of common measure into a problem of trusting the illative sense as a reliable belief-forming process in communities of informed judgment. An original contribution to Newman studies, the book has an interdisciplinary focus, drawing from recent work in social epistemology, virtue epistemology, and cognitive science. It also takes up issues relevant to the philosophy of religion, epistemology of religious belief, systematic theology, ecumenical dialogue, and studies in John Henry Newman. Aquino offers an alternative route to the question 'is Christian belief rationally acceptable belief?'. Moving beyond both modern and post-modern accounts of rationality, he constructs a proposal of informed judgement, blending Newman's notion of reasoning with recent work in social epistemology. Hardback. Condizione: New. Edited by Frederick D. Aquino and Benjamin J. King, this volume gathers scholarly essays examining how John Henry Newman has been read, interpreted, and appropriated across various intellectual and religious traditions since the nineteenth century. Contributors trace his reception within Anglican and Roman Catholic circles, as well as among philosophers, theologians, historians, and educators, considering both admirers who drew on his ideas and critics who challenged them. The collection situates Newman's influence in contexts ranging from the Oxford Movement and Vatican II to contemporary debates in epistemology, doctrinal development, and university education.
