Organized by the Milwaukee Art Museum, the exhibition monograph explores the patronage of British-American industrialist Frederick Layton, who constructed and endowed Milwaukee's first dedicated public art museum. Scholarly essays examine the cultural landscape of late Victorian America, tracing how industrial wealth shaped public museum access, connoisseurship and civic identity in the post-Civil War era. Fine art plates reproduce American Realist, British Academic and European Barbizon works, with color reproductions, black-and-white plates, decorative arts photography and architectural drawings. Presswork is by Burton and Mayer of Milwaukee. Archival floor plans and structural elevations illustrate George Ashdown Audsley's original gallery building, giving a multi-disciplinary visual record of Gilded Age design.
