Modern antique-style gilt-tooled calf-backed marbled boards, contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Overall a fine copy, a trifle rubbed and marked. Book label of J. O. Edwards to FEP. Very slight browning to first blank fly-leaf, otherwise internally clean and crisp. The first edition of the sole collection of verse, with an attached autobiography, by John Frederick Bryant (1753-1791), English pipe-maker and satirical writer. A childhood lover of 'giants, fairies, magicians, and heroes performing impossibilities', Bryant's literary aspirations were frequently thwarted by his struggles with disability - being partially deaf and short-sighted - and his subsequent struggles to find employment. A lucky patronage by a customer, Sir Archibald Macdonald, the Solicitor General, led to Bryant realising his dream of becoming a published author, setting up shop as a stationer and bookseller in London. Bryant's distaste for his work as a pipe-maker, which he viewed as a career of necessity, led to some animosity with the English smoking community - seemingly out of spite, the Smoker's Garland (1893), published by Cope's Tobacco Plant, described Bryant's verse as possessing 'nothing of genius', yet did still mention the 'naà ve and interesting touches in his life and writing'.
