From Preface: This is a semiamusing account of the rape of "Ma" Bell by her lively, though inimaginative, manufacturing sidearm, the Western Electric Company. It was a difficult and trying performance. Ma Bell had a couple of pay telephones in her britches, and the Western Electric telephone pole was under specifications - short. But with the aid of the Federal Trade Commission, an interested bystander, "The Bastard Son" of this union, the Graybar Electric Company, Inc., came into being. The baby's parents were adamant about one provision: All stock in the new company was to be owned by the employees of the company. Thus came into being one of the first and largest of the entirely employee-owned companies in the United States. The tremendous success of this great company is more than justification for the faith and foresight of Ma Bell and Pa Western.There is a message in these ramblings. The Graybar Electric Company, Inc., is a tremendous company and should last to the end of time. But it has pitfalls and cobblestones -- and sandtraps galore.
