Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Barnett Freedman (illustratore). Four unnumbered pages. Number thirty-age in the Ariel poems pamphlet series, part of the first series published by Faber and Faber from 1927 to 1931. Each volume contained one poem accompanied by an illustration by different artists. This copy is in very good condition, and is accompanied by its original envelope. The envelope has some foxing, while there is some staining on the inside cover of the book itself. The first page with the illustration has a band of discolouration related to the flap of the front wrapper, and a similar band of discolouration appears on the last page. There are some small tears along the crease of the envelope flap as well. The poem in this volume is by Roy Campbell (1901-1957), a South-African born writer, who spent most of his time in Europe. He was actively anti-apartheid, and a supporter of racial equality at the time. His support for Franco in Spain led to him being identified as a fascist in England, and his subsequent ostracization from literary circles. He was briefly associated with the Inklings, leading to an acquaintance with both Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. He was known particularly for his satirical verse, most often written in rhyming heroic couplets. The image in this volume is by British artist Barnett Freedman (1901-1958), who was best known as a painter, designer, and illustrator. He also worked with type and lithography.
