Marquard Freher (1565 in Augsburg - 1614 in Heidelberg) was a German jurist, historian, publicist, diplomat, and statesman. He spent most of his professional life in Heidelberg in the service of the Electorate of the Palatinate. Marquard Freher initially studied at the University of Altdorf and then, since Altdorf did not award legal degrees, transferred to the University of Basel in 1581. Later, he went to France to study law at the University of Bourges under Jacques Cujas, receiving his licentiate in April 1585 and his doctorate in civil law in May. Soon after completing his studies, in 1587, he entered the service of the Elector Palatine and remained there until his death. In 1596, he was appointed professor of law, specializing in the Codex, at the University of Heidelberg, but he relinquished this position two years later. In the following years, he served as a councilor to Elector Frederick IV of the Palatinate, for whom he undertook various diplomatic missions, for example, to the Polish royal court. In 1606, Freher became vice-president of the Palatinate's court. He maintained correspondence with, among others, the pastor and chronicler Johann Jakob Rüeger.
