Aggiungi al carrelloMobile, Alabama first edition (third edition overall). 158 pages. Hardcover: H 19.75cm x L 13.5cm. Probably early 20th century half-leather binding - black leather spine and black cloth boards with black leather corners; spine scuffed with 2cm chip to head; spine's gilt lettering remains fairly bright; some staining to boards wi…th edges scuffed. Endpapers are different stock than text block so undoubtedly added at time of rebinding; endpapers foxed/toned; past bookseller's pencil notes on front free endpaper; interior leaves with disproportionately slender top margins (in comparison to bottom) which may have been element of wartime printing or perhaps trimming by binder; foxing/toning to interior leaves with moisture stains of varying depth at top fore-edge corners of pages 1-62. Binding is firm. Long regarded as a major Civil War account, THREE MONTHS IN THE SOUTHERN STATES is referenced in all major bibliographies - Coulter #175; Nevins CWB I #91; Dornbusch IV #10816; Eicher #357; Howes #F-361; Harwell "In Tall Cotton" #64; Sabin #25832. Although preceded by Edinburgh and New York editions issued in 1863, this Mobile, Alabama Goetzel imprint is most valuable of the three for being a scarce Confederate imprint. Touring the Confederacy during April, May, and June 1863 from the Texas frontier to northern Virginia, Lt. Col. Arthur J.L. Fremantle of the British Army Coldstream Guards recorded his American Civil War experiences including witnessing the Battle of Gettysburg and the New York City Draft Riots as well as meeting Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, Judah P. Benjamin, James Longstreet, P.G.T. Beauregard, Braxton Bragg, Leonidas Polk, front-line soldiers, Sam Houston, among many others.
