En 1692 le Journal des arrêts comprend 4 volumes, dont le dernier contient « quelques arrêts et règlements notables qui avaient été omis des années 1676 et 1677. » En 1646 Jean du Fresne, seigneur du Préaulx et avocat au Parlement de Paris, fait paraître son Journal des arrêts, premier recueil en français d'arrêts du Parlement de Paris ; on y apprend par exemple que « Condamnation contre un Chanoine à une amende honorable pour irreverence & jurements faits en l'Eglise, ne fait vacquer le Benefice de plein droit » (CXXV), que « Condamné à mort par Sentence, depuis confirmé par Arrest, est incapable d'avoir pû recueillir une succession à luy écheüe pendant la sentence de mort » (LIX), que « les statües de marbre posées sur des bases de pierre font partie de la maison, quoy que non enclavées dans la muraille » (LIII), et que « Femme notée de legereté par le testament de son mary, convolant en seconde Nopces dans l'an du deüil, peut estre interdite d'aliener les meubles de la communauté de son deffunt mari, qui estoit opulente. » (XLIX) L'auteur ne se limite pas à reproduire les décisions, mais en donne également une explication et résume les plaidoiries des avocats. L'ouvrage connait un immense succès en librairie. Du Fresne meurt en 1675, et François de la Guessière reprend le flambeau du Journal des arrêts pour les tomes 2 à 4, suivi par Nupied (t. 5) et Duchemin (t. 6 et 7). Le projet du journal cesse en 1757, date à laquelle il compte 7 tomes, corrigés, augmentés et réédités à de nombreuses reprises.
