FRICK, GEORGE FREDERICK / STEARNS, RAYMOND PHINEAS, 1904-1970. Mark Catesby: the colonial Audubon. Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1961, x, 137pp., . Sometimes called the "founder of American ornithology", Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was also a significant naturalist and scientific artist. Without Catesby's help, the systems of Carl Linnaeus and the other great taxonomists of the eighteenth century would have been far less complete. Catesby also introduced the practice of illustrating birds, fish, animals, and plants amidst their natural environments. His major work, The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, was considered the most elegant work on the flora and fauna of British North America produced in the eighteenth century. This book examines both Catesby's life and his impact as a naturalist. - CONTENTS: Catesby the man. The background of a naturalist -- The apprenticeship of a naturalist, 1712-22 -- The naturalist in the field -- The Natural History : twenty years of labor -- Catesby's last years -- Catesby the naturalist. Catesby as a naturalist : ornithology and botany -- Catesby as a naturalist : cartography, geology, anthropology, zoology -- Mark Catesby and the natural history circle -- The history of The Natural History of Carolina -- A check list of Mark Catesby's published works -- Thomas More and his expedition to New England. …
