Der dunkle Norden von der strahlenden Antike träumt und von der Harmonie einer Welt, die vielleicht durch eine Sehnsucht nach Licht, Gold und Honig heilen kann. - Der estnische Autor Meelis Friedenthal, geb. 1973 in Viljandi (Estland), hat an der Universität Tartu eine Doktorarbeit über einen philosophisch-theologischen Traktat aus dem 13. Jahrhundert über das Sehen und die Vision geschrieben. Friedenthal war als Dozent an der Fakultät für Theologie und Geschichte tätig und arbeitet derzeit als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Universitätsbibliothek Tartu. Sein derzeitiges Forschungsthema ist die Geisteswissenschaft des 17. Jahrhunderts. Friedenthal hat sich einen Namen als Autor spekulativer Romane gemacht. Sein erster Roman Goldenes Zeitalter handelt von der Rolle der Geschichte bei der Gestaltung unserer Identität und gewann 2004 den dritten Platz in einem nationalen Romanwettbewerb. Im darauffolgenden Jahr gewann seine Erzählung Nerissa einen estnischen Science-Fiction-Preis. Er ist außerdem Mitglied des Redaktionsausschusses des Webzines Algernon, das Science-Fiction-Geschichten, Nachrichten und Artikel veröffentlicht. Friedenthal hat während der Arbeit an Die Bienen auch ein umfangreiches Postskriptum über den historischen Kontext der im Roman beschriebenen Ereignisse verfasst.
