Pract. P.' Above this is the stipple engraving, in good condition, showing 'DR. WILLIAM CULLEN' in profile. The artist is named as 'Ridley' and the portrait, in an oval border, is topped by the words 'European Magazine'. Another thin strip of paper, above the engraving, reads: 'From Lot 293 of the collection of Mr. J Naylor: sold by Sotheby Wilkinson and Hodge on 23/7/85'. See Image.

Aggiungi al carrelloLettsom's entry in the Oxford DNB erroneously states that his son John Miers Lettsom, M.D., 'a physician of promise', died in 1799. For the true details, see Gentleman's Magazine, January 1800. 1p, 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and worn, with thin strip of paper adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf, which is addressed, with fragment of seal in black wax, to 'Mr Charles Taylor | 134 | Cheapside'. The recipient may well be Charles Taylor (d.1816), physician, originally a Manchester calico printer and dyer, who later became Secretary of the Society of Arts, London. Folded four times. Reads: 'Dear Mr Taylor | When I last saw you, I was the happiest man, in an amiable Son Dr John; whom it has pleased Divine Wisdom, to take from me this day, and thus inflict upon me the severest dispensation I ever experienced, and which confines me this week within the House, whilst you have the sincerest wishes of yours resply | J. C Lettsom'. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

The body of the letter reads: Dear Jesse / Don t you or your fair friends forget Supper at Vun Undred and Vunety Vun Mount Street tomorrow Saturday night at 11 oclock or as soon after it as you can come. / N.B. "No Dogs admitted on these premises under a severe fine & penalty." / thine & my unhappy Country / God save the Quin. Aggiungi al carrello1p, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to the second leaf, which has been cut down the middle vertically, resulting in loss to one of the two postmarks, as well as to Gooch's addressing of the letter: '[.]ent Esqre | [] Webb Street | [] Borough '. Gooch begins his letter: 'Dear Sir, | I shall be very happy to see you at my House, and I have deferred writing to say so because I could not fix a time for it.' He suggests a time for him to dine on the following Sunday, adding: 'I shall be quite alone and happy to talk with you for an hour or two about Yarmouth news.' He concludes with thanks for the 'Pheasants', which were 'very fine'. Aggiungi al carrello4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf. The recipient is not named. The letter begins: 'My Dear Sir, | I beg to introduce my friend Mr. Walker to you as he is frequenting the Leeds Anniversary Meeting of the Association'. He presumes that the recipient has not 'disposed of many copies' of his 'late publication': 'The demand here is steady and continued but not extensive.' He sees that the recipient was 'right' when he stated, speaking from his 'actual experience', 'that such publications are chiefly for giving and but little for sale'. His 'expectation will be more than realized' if two hundred copies of the publication sell. After 'squaring up' with the recipient, Noble will 'distribute the remainder' as 'judiciously' as he can, having regard to his own 'probable interests'. He would like to see him in Manchester, though he would find Noble 'as of erst, alone, and widowed, my family being in the Country for salutiferous purposes.' He asks to be remembered to 'Dr. Evans, whose hearty kindness, and most unexpected politeness to myself whilst in town, I never think of without a feeling of gratitude, and respect, and liking for the noble hearted fellow. Will you come? if you don't I shall really feel offended'. He feels sure that only 'something untoward' would prevent a visit. He ends by asking after 'Mrs. C.' A postscript reads: 'I see no notice in the Lancet yet. Am I indebted to you for a very favourable notice in the Argus?' From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.
