The publisher's blurb reads: ''Other novels have described the conquest of high mountains by courageous men. But this novel, with its thrilling accounts of difficult climbs and daring rescues, gives us the first full picture of the lives of the Alpine guides, their aspirations, their tragedies their loves and their amusements. In particular, it gives us the story of a young man who wants desperately to be one of the guides of Chamonix in the Mont Blanc area. However, in the course of a rescue climb, he suffers a fall which causes him to lose his nerve. He sets out to regain it; his struggles form the theme of this tale.'' The author was himself a guide and a member of the famous Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix. This was his first successful novel.
