Oktober 1931 in Berlin, unternahm nach einem Studium der Forst- und Naturwissenschaften forschend und jagend ausgedehnte Reisen durch Europa, Afrika sowie Nord- und Südamerika. 1885 wurde er Generalsekretä…r der Gesellschaft für Kolonisation und Chefredakteur der Kolonialpolitischen Korrespondenz. Im Auftrag dieser Gesellschaft ging er 1887 nach Ostafrika, gründete die landwirtschaftliche Versuchsstation Usungula" und leitete diese bis zu ihrer kriegsbedingten Aufgabe im Jahre 1889. Als Journalist und Schriftsteller, vor allem aber auch als Jäger, hat er mehr als dreißig Bücher und zahllose Fachartikel publiziert. Besonders eng war er mit dem Heidedichter" Hermann Löns befreundet, mit dem ihn die Liebe zur Natur und deren Schutz, zur Heimat, zur Jagd und zum Schreiben verband. Sein kämpferischer Einsatz für Wald, Wild und Flur und weidgerechtes Jagen machte ihn zu Lebzeiten bei Jägern aller Länder und Kulturvölker bekannt und schuf ihm höchste Anerkennung. In seinen Werken hat er die innersten Beziehungen zwischen Erde, Kosmos, Menschen und Tieren lebendig beschrieben. Von der ihm nachfolgenden jüngeren Generation der deutschen Jäger wurde er liebevoll als Elchvater" bezeichnet, weil er sich insbesondere für zukunftsweisende Regelungen zum Schutze des Elchwildes, aber auch zum Schutz des Wildes in den Kolonien eingesetzt hat. Sein Grab befindet sich auf dem Ehrenfriedhof in Berlin-Stahnsdorf. Das Gedankengut von Fritz Bley ist es wert, erhalten zu bleiben: Aus seinen Werken wurden deshalb die schönsten Gedichte und Lieder in diesem Buch zusammengestellt, 240 Seiten.
