Le 18 décembre 1994, trois spéléologues (Jean-Marie Chauvet, Éliette Brunel et Christian Hilaire) découvrent, à Vallon Pont d?Arc, en Ardèche, l?entrée ? obstruée depuis 21 000 ans ? d?une grotte ornée gigantesque dont les peintures et gravures les plus anciennes datent de plus de 36 000 ans. Du fait de la fermeture naturelle de cette cavité, l?ensemble des ?uvres pariétales et les vestiges archéologiques qui s?y trouvent ont été maintenus dans un état de conservation exceptionnel.Ce site, immédiatement protégé, sécurisé et qui, pour cette raison, ne sera jamais ouvert au grand public, est dès lors consacré à la recherche. Depuis 1998, une équipe pluridisciplinaire et internationale étudie la grotte dans toute la diversité des approches scientifiques. Ce sont les conclusions de ce travail qui pour la première fois sont ici exposées.Le lecteur a donc le privilège de découvrir, auprès de l?équipe des chercheurs aujourd?hui dirigée par Carole Fritz, les Premières Salles de la grotte.
