These theatrical programs for Fritz Lang's two-part fantasy epic film Die Nibelungen, were issued to coincide with the Austrian premiere in Vienna in 1924. What…is most unique about the films' Austrian theatrical release is that for some reason the distributor OEFA decided to split the already two-part film into two further parts. The first film Siegfried is here shown split in half as "Siegfrieds kampf mit dem Drachen" and "Siegfrieds Tod", and the second film, Kriemhilds Rache is split into "König Etzel" and "Der Nibelungen Tod". Each program contains a cast list and a detailed plot synopsis. The programs for each of the Siegfried parts are numbered #1246 and 1247, respectively. Programs light sunned along edges, with a few minor stains. Some pencil markings. In overall vary good condition. Extremelely scarce. *Printed as part of the "Wiener Kino-Bibliothek" (Vienna Film Library) series.

A FILM THAT IS REGARDED A PIONEERING SCIENCE-FICTION MOVIE, AND AMONG THE FIRST FEATURE-LENGTH MOVIES OF THAT GENRE, THE FILM WAS INSCRIBED IN UNESCO S MEMORY OF THE WORLD REGISTER IN 2001, THE FIRST FILM THUS DISTINGUISEHD. I have recently seen the silliest film, wrote H. G. Wells in the New York Times in 1927. I do not believe it would be possible to make one sillier. The film he was reviewing, or rather demolishing, was Metropolis, Fritz Lang s acclaimed dystopian masterpiece. Ninety years later, Metropolis is recognised as one of the landmarks of science-fiction and a highpoint of late silent cinema. Its gothic-futurist design, wild-haired maniac scientist and sexualised robot-vamp influenced swathes of science-fiction films to follow, not to mention being reinterpreted in everything from pop videos and adverts to high fashion. Still, Wells found its vision of life a century in the future unrealistic the impossibility of such towering buildings, the low-tech aeroplanes, the workers toiling to produce goods of no value. His low opinion can be mitigated by two factors: first that he was watching not the bona fide Metropolis but an over-enthusiastically censored and re-cut American release, and second that, with a wince, he suspected that many aspects of the story had been lifted from his novel When the Sleeper Wakes, first serialised in 1898. Against the odds, film history has not taken Wells s side. The full Metropolis, the version shown in Germany, remains lost, and for decades its reputation as a triumph of cinematic spectacle rested on butchered versions, such as the one that so underwhelmed Wells. Despite that, Giorgio Moroder s 1984 restoration with eye-popping colour-washes and an uptempo pop-rock soundtrack made it a cult classic. The discovery of missing footage in Argentina in 2008, means that we now have a near-complete Metropolis, and it can be seen to its best advantage. Directed by Lang from a screenplay by his wife The von Harbou, Metropolis concerns a nightmarish future city in which the rich and idle live in cosseted luxury, breathing the fresh air at the top of the city while the proletariat toil in the factories and crawl home to slums beneath the earth. The workers begin to organise under the peaceable leadership of a schoolteacher called Maria (Brigitte Helm), so the ruling-class villains have a man-machine robot take on her seductive image to lead them astray Metropolis is flawed but not hobbled by its message. Its scope and style are still breathtaking, and in its restored version its narrative is thrilling and expertly paced. The grandeur of the looming future-city was inspired by Lang s first glimpse of New York from the water, although film historians will note the influence of Giovanni Pastrone s Cabiria (1914) in the hellish factory. If there s a common ground we can find with Wells s slam review, it s that between the publication of his When the Sleeper Wakes and the release of Metropolis, the new medium of cinema had embraced the science-fiction genre and developed in several exciting directions (Pamela Hutchinson on Metropolis for the British Film Institute, 2017).

All text in German. 1) This is a complete collection of 40 postcards printed by Verlag Ross, for Ufa-Delca Film, to celebrate the release of Fritz Lang's two-part epic fantasy film Die Nibelungen. The postcards measure approximately 3.5 x5.5" each, and are printed in striking sepia-toned photogravure, on heavy cardstock. The images depict characters and dramatic scenes from the film, covering both parts "Siegfried" and "Kriemhilds Rache" ("Kriemhild's Revenge"), and are divided into 6 groupings. Each card is captioned with the serial number, and title of the character or scene, with the name of the actor often mentioned as well. The final group of 4 cards is a sequence showcasing the pivotal dramatic battle between Siegfried and the dragon. This set is not to be confused with the series of colored postcards by Uvachrom, which were based, in part, on these images. The postcards were never used (circulated), but some have a red triangle stamped insignia on the back. The cards are housed in a blue leather covered photo album with plastic sleeves. The cards and album are in near fine condition overall. 2) Also included is an unused (empty) official Verlag Ross album to house the postcards. Oblong brown-grey thick paper wrappers, illustrated with a gilt-bordered cutout image from one the postcards, depicting Seigfried and the dragon, and gilt-stamped lettering. Brown string-tassel. The album is empty and contains 25 double-sided leaves. Publisher's debossed blind-stamp on the bottom of the back wrapper. Protected by modern mylar. 3) Die Nibelungen (Complete set of 75 Cigarette Cards in an Album). Small folio. 13x10". Textured Gray-green string-tied wrappers, with embossed brown and gold lettering and helmet illustration on the front cover. Yellow-green decorative tassel. The is an album containing the complete collection of Cigarette Cards for "Die Nibelungen", produced by the Cigarettenfabrik Constantin company of Hannover in 1928. Each card measures 2.5x4" and featured b/w photogravure images from the film. Many of the images featured are the same as those of those of the Verlag Ross set, but many are unique to this collection. Each double-sided leaf of the album contains a mat with an average of 6 windowed cutouts, framing the cards, which have been slid underneath. Each cutout section contains a caption in German bellow, naming or describing the image on the respective card. The set coves both parts of the film "Siegfried" and "Kriemhilds Rache". Introduction to the collection from the company, on the first page of the album. Text in German. Wrappers with some minor creasing along the edges and to the corners. Interior with some minor bumping to the corners of some of the leaves, a light closed tear along the bottom left corner of one of the leaves. Wrappers, interior and cards in very good+ to near fine condition overall. Protected by modern mylar. 4) The rarer smaller variant of the same album with smaller cards. Includes all the same images in the same order, except for image #18 (Gunther) missing. 74 of 75 images present. Protected by modern mylar. 5) "Die Nibelungen. Ein Deutsches Heldenlied". 24pp. Rare original theater program for the German premiere of the film on Feb. 14th 1924, held at the Ufa-Palast am Zoo in Berlin. Dark grey paper wrappers, with red string-tied binding, and the original UFA gilt-stamped emboss.

Noted as FIRST DRAFT CONTINUITY on the front wrapper, production number 559, copy number 29, dated Octob…er 7, 1940. Title page present, also dated October 7, 1940 and noted as 1st Draft Continuity. Pages very good but for a bit of toning and worming to the upper left corner of the final 15 pages, cover soiled, worn and with some splits to the extremities, good. Ex-Howard Barnes; Richard Manney; Gene Hackman. Custom cloth box. Inscribed on the title page by screenwriter Dudley Nichols to film critic Howard Barnes; "Critic par excellence in memory of our old days on The World when neither of us dreamed of working in this fascinating medium of the film Affectionately Dudley Nichols July 15, 1941". Referencing the time they both spent as journalists for the New York World. There is a postscript that reads: "This was my first draft, done in three weeks. Many things happened to it afterwards, as your keen eye will note. D.N". A British big-game hunter is captured after stalking Hitler as a sporting challenge, then escapes to England only to be relentlessly pursued by Nazi agents whose campaign of terror claims the life of the young woman who sheltered him. After a harrowing confrontation with his nemesis, he acknowledges his true intent and parachutes back into Germany, now committed to carrying out the assassination he once denied contemplating. Set in 1939 Bavaria and London, shot on set at 20th Century Fox studios in Los Angeles.

You may also know that the one company I made these films for, MGM Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (Fury), is in severe financial difficulty, and the other, Walter Wanger Ltd (You Only Live Once), has long ceased to exist. Walter Wanger himself passed away about a year ago. []And now to myself or more precisely, to the F.L. film retrospective you are planning, on the occasion of the somewhat undesirable, but now inevitable, 80th birthday of the gentleman in question. []I have often said that a director should not write or speak about his films:His films should speak for him!Furthermore, I believe film is the art form of our century. As such, its foremost task is to be critical and not merely to 'entertain.'Just as the young people of our time are far ahead of previous generations in their aspirations, I believe that film and I hope I have done this in my own work should also be socially and critically engaged with the present.Film should reflect and shape us.The social consequences for example, in my so-called crime films are essentially the discreet assertion of a standard of right and wrong, of good and evil, in our time!Idealism and realism are, at their core, inseparable and equally inseparable in their importance for human freedom. To Albin Poetzsch of Filmklub Meissen regarding the film Hangmen Also Die:"[] After the collapse of the Hitler regime, my former editor wrote to me saying that she had tried to locate the copy, but that 'it had been confiscated by the Russians'. To what extent that is true, I nat…urally could not verify. However, when I visited the East Berlin film archive a few years ago, it turned out that they had complete copies of several of my films. Unfortunately, at that time I didn't ask about Der müde Tod (Destiny). []What you write to me about the mutilation of Hangmen Also Die is, sadly, very typical for the distribution system. There is hardly a single film that hasn't been mutilated over the years and various circumstances be it by cinema owners themselves, who often heavily shorten a film in order to squeeze in one more screening per day, or by an employee in a foreign country eager to prove their 'efficiency.' []The idea for the film came entirely from me. At the time, I told Brecht about it and asked whether he would be interested in working on the screenplay with me. Brecht enthusiastically agreed, and after he and I had worked together for, I believe, a few weeks outlining the sequence of scenes in broad terms, the production and I looked for an English-speaking collaborator for him, since Brecht spoke very poor English. We eventually settled on a certain John Wexley, who spoke perfect German. []At first, Brecht and Wexley got along very well. But when, after completing the manuscript, the question arose as to who would be credited as the author of the screenplay, a dispute broke out between them. As is customary in such cases here, both parties were summoned before an arbitration tribunal of the Screen Directors Guild of America. Although Hanns Eisler, the composer, and I fully supported Brecht, sole authorship of the screenplay was awarded to Wexley.That this was not only a great injustice but complete nonsense is obvious to anyone familiar with Brecht's writing style, and to anyone who reads even a few scenes of the final screenplay. For example, the scene where the professor delivers a lecture about the Gestapo in his study before the assassin seeks refuge with him, or the prison scene where he dictates a letter to his daughter, intended for his son, which she is to memorize and many others.The reasoning of this peculiar arbitration tribunal was that, after the war was won, Brecht would return to Germany anyway, and therefore sole authorship would be more valuable for Wexley than for Brecht.".

To Albin Poetzsch of Filmklub Meissen regarding his film Hangmen Also Die:"I was very interested to hear that Hangmen Also Die (Auch Henker müssen sterben) will be included in your film club's program this year, and I would like to answer your related questions right away:The original… version of the film began with a scene at Prague Castle (Hradschin), in which Heydrich announced to the assembled representatives of the Czech people harsher measures by the German occupation authorities. This was followed by the sequence showing the assassin's escape. (I can no longer recall precisely, but I don't believe the actual assassination of Heydrich was shown though of course, there was later the scene with Heydrich in the hospital, which Lotte Eisner wrote about.)The ending of the film showed a Nazi report in which they admitted that the Czech resistance had planted a scapegoat (a traitor to the cause of the Czech people) as the supposed assassin, and that they still did not know the identity of the real attacker.This was followed by a scene where the Czech people pass by the graves of the executed hostages including the professor which were lavishly decorated with flowers and wreaths, and they lay more flowers on the graves.Then came the final title card: an image with the large word NOT (Emergency/Resistance) and then The End.Brecht only worked on the script and had no involvement in directing the film. He also made no suggestions whatsoever regarding the direction.The work on the script and the pre-script stage belongs to the most pleasant memories of my career in film. []".
