Une note manuscrite ancienne rédigée par un bibliophile (sans doute un proche de l'auteur ou qui le connaissait suffisamment bien) au verso du premier faux-titre donne quelques informations sur cet ouvrage : "M. Goguet, Conseiller au parlement de Paris, auteur de ce livre, n'a pas joui longtemps de l'honneur infini que lui a fait cet ouvrage ; il mourut quelques mois après avoir mis au jour son ouvrage, de la petite vérole en mai 1758 âgé de 40 ans. En lui nous avons perdu un de nos meilleurs citoyens, un vrai sage, et un savant sans enflure, un homme d'un commerce aimable, quoique voué tout entier aux lettres, et un ami de la société mais qui n'y apportait point le ton ou l'air imposant du savoir, ni l'autorité que donne souvent l'esprit de religion dont il était pénétré. Qui après l'avoir lu ne dira de son illustre auteur ; consummatus in brevi, explevit tempora multa (qui signifie : accompli en peu de temps, il a accompli beaucoup de choses. Cf. in Bible, Vulgate, Sapientia 4:13). La même main a inscrit à la fin du volume la mention suivante : le 21 mai 1758 20 livres broché (date et prix de l'acquisition de ces trois tomes alors brochés et qui le sont restés jusqu'au milieu du XIXe siècle). Jolie reliure pastiche signée du relieur lyonnais Jean-Pierre Bruyère (1804-1870). Cet ouvrage a connu une réédition en 6 volumes in-12 l'année suivante (1759). Ouvrage d'un grand intérêt qui aborde la plupart des sujets pour l'histoire de l'antiquité (avant l'éclosion de la civilisation romaine) : constructions, commerce, agriculture, sciences, constructions, droits, coutumes, murs, religion, arts, etc. On remarquera particulièrement les chapitres et les planches relatives à l'histoire de la civilisation égyptienne encore alors fort méconnue et incomprise pour l'essentiel. Chaque partie se termine par d'intéressantes dissertations sur divers sujets (sur les noms et les figures des constellations ; sur les nom des planètes ; sur l'évaluation des monnaies et des mesures grecques ; sur les périodes astronomiques des Chaldéens ; sur les antiquités des Babyloniens, des Egyptiens et des Chinois ; sur le Sanchoniaton ; sur l'authenticité et l'antiquité du Livre de Job ; sur les constellations dont il est parlé dans le Livre de Job ; etc.). L'auteur, Antoine-Yves Goguet (1716-1758), juriste de formation, est connu pour ce seul ouvrage rédigé avec l'aide d'Alexandre-Conrad Fugère (1721-1758), « Le succès de cet ouvrage fut brillant et mérité » (Michaud, Biographie universelle). Son ouvrage est apprécié jusqu'au début du XIXe siècle, puis tombe dans l'oubli avant de reconnaître un regain d'actualité à compter de la fin du XXe siècle. Goguet meurt des suites de la petite vérole le 2 mai 1758 à Paris. Les planches ont été gravées sous la direction de Pierre Patte (1723-1814). La planche montrant les grandes pyramides d'Egypte est remarquable.
