Picking up where his last book, The Jew Car, left off, Fühmann probes his own susceptibility to ideology's seductions-Nazism, then socialism-and examines their antidote, the goad of Trakl's enigmatic verses. He confronts Trakl's "unlivable life," as his poetry transcends the panaceas of black-and-white ideology, ultimately bringing a painful, necessary understanding of "the whole human being: in victories and triumphs as in distress and defeat, in temptation and obsession, in splendor and in ordure." In 1982, the German edition of At the Burning Abyss won the West German Scholl Siblings Prize, celebrating its "courage to resist inhumanity." At a time of political extremism and polarization, has lost none of its urgency.

A collection of autobiographical stories, each of which is a snapshot of a turning point in the life of the author, from early childhood incidents of anti-Semitism, to his early embrace of and late rejection of the goals of Nazi ideology. This is the first edition of the 2013 edition, originally published in Germany in 1962. Translation by Isabel Fargo Cole. 5" X 8-1/2", 257 pages. Black boards with the title and author name imprinted on the spine in gold. Boards are flat, binding is tight and square. Bottom right corner is bumped with a crease mark. Top right corner of the text is slightly bumped with a light crease mark to the top right corner of pages 3 to 125, crease is at most 1/4" diagonal, diminishing in size with later pages. Edges of the text block are clean. No former ownership marks. No writing on the text pages. Not a library discard, not a remainder. The attached photo is of the copy we have in our inventory.
