Raised in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, he wrote many beloved children's poetry books, edited major poetry series (including Longman's Poetry Library), and was awarded an OBE for services to literature and education. A close friend of Sir John Betjeman, Clark specialised in gentle, nature-inspired verse for young readers. The illustrators were a talented team of Japanese artists specially commissioned by Shufunotomo Co. Ltd. (Tokyo) for this international edition. Working in the vibrant mid-century watercolour and mixed-media style typical of 1960s Japanese children's publishing, they created the book's distinctive, colourful artwork — each poem illustrated by a different artist for wonderful visual variety. Illustrators (full credit page present): Nine leading Japanese artists (pictures © 1967 Shufunotomo Co. Ltd., Tokyo): Kozo Kakimoto, Konosuke Iwamoto, Jiro Mizuno, Mioko Suzuki, Takushi Kitada, Takeo Ishida, Teruyo Endo, Kuniro Fukazawa, Rokuro Komamiya Condition Boards & Spine: Bright, only slightly faded red pictorial boards with only the very lightest shelf-rubbing at the extreme tips of the corners and a faint touch of rubbing at the spine ends. No bumps, no tears, no scuffs, no fading. Gold lettering on front cover and spine remains sharp and bright. Binding: Tight and square; no cracking, no loose pages. Pages & Illustrations: All 41 pages are clean, bright and unmarked. No foxing, no spotting, no browning, no creases. Every colour illustration is vivid with no fading or offset. Endpapers & Prelims: Clean lime-green endpapers with the original white geometric design; no ownership inscriptions, no bookplates, no stamps, no price-clipping or residue. A scarce and exceptionally charming 1968 first-edition collection of original children's poems by the acclaimed British poet Leonard Clark. This delightful Hamlyn volume pairs 25 gentle, imaginative poems with vibrant, full-page and double-page colour illustrations created by nine different leading Japanese artists. The result is a unique mid-century fusion of British children's poetry and superb Japanese illustration, printed in Japan with outstanding colour fidelity that still looks fresh today.
