Aggiungi al carrelloJapanese American Life in San Francisco on the Eve of Pearl Harbor and Wartime Incarceration, 1939-1941. Photograph Album Documenting Nisei Friendships, the Golden Gate International Exposition, Prewar U.S. Military Service, and a Community Soon to Be Uprooted by Executive Order 9066 Photo album containing 61 silver gelatin photographs, approximately 1 x 2 to 5 x 7 inches, preserved in an embossed vinyl album bearing the inscription "(1939 World's Exposition) San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge," San Francisco and the Bay Area, California, 1939 to 1941. Most photographs have handwritten inscriptions en verso. An unusually intimate photographic record of Japanese American friendships, cultural activities, military service, and everyday life in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area during the final years before Pearl Harbor and the forced removal and mass incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Centered on a circle of young men and women associated with Fumi Hayashi, to whom numerous photographs are personally inscribed, the album preserves the ordinary pleasures and freedoms of a generation whose lives would be profoundly disrupted by the federal government's wartime policies beginning in 1942. The photographs depict young Japanese Americans enjoying automobile excursions, visiting the Golden Gate International Exposition, gathering with friends, exploring the California coast, and posing in fashionable contemporary clothing. Several photographs document visits to the exposition on Treasure Island in 1940, including portraits of two young women in traditional Japanese kimonos, identified as Yoshiko and Shizuko. Other images show young women wearing tailored jackets, hats, dresses, and coats, posing beside automobiles, along city streets, and in landscaped gardens. Repeated portraits identify a young woman named Cecilia, while other photographs document visits to the Japanese Tea Garden, picnics, boating excursions, coastal scenery, and San Francisco landmarks, including Telegraph Hill in 1941. Of particular historical importance are four photographs of a Japanese American serviceman identified as Joe, apparently surnamed Yoshimura, one of which is dated 1941. These include a personally inscribed portrait, a striking photograph of Joe in military uniform and helmet astride a motorcycle during maneuvers, and another showing him beside a U.S. Army ambulance prominently displaying the Red Cross insignia. The photographs suggest military service or training involving medical or transportation operations, although his unit and assignment have not been identified. Their association with the album's 1941 chronology is especially compelling: approximately 5,000 Japanese Americans were already serving in the United States Army when Pearl Harbor was attacked, before the government began forcibly removing their families and communities from the West Coast. A Joe Yoshimura (1923-2014) from California's Central Valley is independently documented as having been incarcerated with his family at the Jerome camp in Arkansas before volunteering for the U.S. Army and training at Camp Wheeler, Georgia. No evidence establishes that he is the serviceman represented here, and the chronology of his military service raises questions about the possible identification. Another important figure is Horace Hanada, a friend of Fumi who took numerous photographs in the album, as confirmed by contemporary inscriptions on their versos. Among his identified work is a photograph of a pavilion dated 1940. His repeated photographic contributions provide an unusually valuable element of authorship and help establish the collection as a record of an interconnected social circle rather than an assemblage of unrelated images. Other identified individuals include Katherine Kageyama, while additional photographs bear the names of friends and acquaintances, personal dedications, and affectionate handwritten messages. The album also includes a photograph of Republican presidential candidate Wendell Willkie during his 1940 campaign appearance in San Francisco's Chinatown, providing a connection to the national political life of the period. Other photographs preserve references to an August 1940 visit to the Japanese Tea Garden, the Golden Gate International Exposition, and dates including June 1939, April and August 1940, and June and July 1941. A studio portrait bears the imprint of a Los Angeles photographer, while another photograph is credited to M. Yoshikawa. These contemporary inscriptions, dates, and photographer identifications substantially enhance the album's documentary value. The photographs reveal a Japanese American community deeply integrated into California's social and cultural life, combining traditional Japanese customs with contemporary American fashions, recreation, and public activities. The young women wearing kimonos at the international exposition, friends posing proudly beside automobiles, and groups enjoying gardens, beaches, and public celebrations reflect a generation whose lives were firmly rooted in America. Within months of the album's final dated photographs, this world would be transformed. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, establishing the basis for the compulsory removal of approximately 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast, roughly two-thirds of them American citizens. Japanese American families throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area were ordered to leave their homes on short notice, generally permitted to bring only what they could carry. Homes, businesses, automobiles, furniture, and personal possessions had to be sold at substantial losses, stored, entrusted to others, or abandoned. Many Bay Area Japanese Americans were initially confined at the converted Tanforan racetrack in San Bruno, where some families were housed in former horse stalls, before being transferred to in.
