Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed in black ink on the front free endpaper by Friedlander. Hardcover. Fine black silk cloth-covered boards with title blind-stamped on cover and stamped in gold on spine, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs by Lee Friedlander. Essays (in Japanese and English) by John Szarkowski, Takashi Tsujii and Koko Yamagishi. Includes a biography (in Japanese and English) compiled by Fuminori Yokoe. Designed by Kazuo Nitta. 132 pp., with 106 black and white plates beautifully printed on matte paper by Dainippon Printing Company, Tokyo. 10-11/16 x 11-9/16 inches. Out of print. Extremely scarce. A spectacular copy of this beautifully printed and rare Lee Friedlander retrospective published on the occasion of the Lee Friedlander exhibition held in Japan under the auspices of the Seibu Museum of Art and the Asahi Shimbun. Lee Friedlander's work is widely known for transforming our visual understanding of contemporary American culture. Known for passionately embracing all subject matter, Friedlander photographed nearly every facet of American life from the 1950s to the present. From factories in Pennsylvania, to the jazz scene in New Orleans, to the deserts of the Southwest, Friedlander's complex formal visual strategies continue to influence the way we understand, analyze, and experience modern American experience. Friedlander's work continues to influence photographic practice internationally, in part due to the heightened sense of self-awareness that is a trademark of so many of his photographs and in part because of his ability to embrace wide-ranging subject matter, always interpreting it in an elegance that hadn't existed prior to his work. Fine in Fine dust jacket. A Mint copy. One of the least known outstanding monographs of Friedlander's work. Includes a portfolio from the photographer's "Cherry Blossom Time in Japan" series (previously published only in a rare 1986 portfolio of 25 photogravures) in addition to essays by John Szarkowski, Takashi Tsujii and Koko Yamagishi. Signed by Author. Signed.…

Softcover. Condizione: Very good condition. First edition. Large Quarto. 183 (1)pp. Original stiff gray wraps with modern design and black lettering on cover. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography from September 19 - November 12, 1991. A continuation of "Innovation Japanese Photography in the 1960s," an exhibition at the museum in April of 1991. "The usual approach in Japanese photography had been to organize photographs on themes. These [new] photographers abandoned the approach, shifting from an objective to a more inner-directed mode of expression. In the course of that shift, Nakahara and Okada, the photographers who had made explicit their ideas in Provoke [magazine started in 1968], produced anti-photographic photographs coarse, blurred, out of focus images." (Yokoe Fuminori). Moriyama had joined the magazine for its second issue and it ceased publishing with its third issue in 1969. This catalog contains b/w photographs, some color, of the 1970s by Daido Moriyama, Issei Suda, Hiromi Tsuchida, Bishin Jumonji, Kazuo Kitai, Ryoji Akiyama, Hiroji Kubota, Hajime Sawatari, Taiji Arita, Gasho Yamamura, Jun Morinaga, Akihide Tamura, Hiroshi Yamazaki, Miyako Ishiuchi, and Hitoshi Tsukiji.
