Trade Paperback. Condizione: Used - Very Good. Architectural discourse today is characterized by an overlapping conversation between architects and academics, teachers and students, theorists and practitioners. Certain terms -- 'diagram, ' 'extreme form, ' 'autonomy, ' and 'the generic, ' among others -- capture the moment in architecture in definition and in operation. 'Crib Sheets 'is a guide -- a 'crib' -- to twenty-two of those buzzwords, framing contemporary currents and trajectories. Each of the words is presented with a list of quotations, or sound bites, arranged in order of length and drawn from more than two hundred commentators, from Charles Baudelaire, Le Corbusier, and Buckminster Fuller to Frank Gehry, Paul Goldberger, and Rem Koolhaas. The structure attempts to evoke the present-day architectural conversation, capturing social milieus, current events, clusters of topics, and even background noise and eavesdropping. Open copy with light to mild wear, intact binding.

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Dirt as fertile medium and metaphor in cities, landscapes, process, and design- dirty attitudes in essays, interviews, and projects.Dirt presents a selection of works that share dirty attitudes- essays, interviews, excavations, and projects that view dirt not as filth but as a medium, a metaphor, a material, a process, a design tool, a narrative, a system. Rooted in the landscape architect's perspective, Dirt views dirt not as repulsive but endlessly giving, fertile, adaptive, and able to accommodate difference while maintaining cohesion. This dirty perspective sheds light on social connections, working processes, imaginative ideas, physical substrates, and urban networks. Dirt is a matrix; as a book, it organizes contributions from architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning and design, historic preservation, fine arts, and art history. The chapters predict and report on city waterfronts revamped by climate change, the reinvention of suburbia, and cityscapes of ruins; dish the dirt with yet-to-be proven facts; make such unexpected linkages as ornament to weed growth and cell networks to zip-ties; examine the work of innovative thinkers who have imagined or created, among other things, a replica of Robert Smithson's famous earthwork Spiral Jetty in "table-top scale," live models of the Arctic ice caps, and an inhabitable "green roof"; and describe an ecological landscape urbanism that incorporates the natural sciences in its processes. Dirt as fertile medium and metaphor in cities, landscapes, process, and design: dirty attitudes in essays, interviews, and projects. Z : 140 Seiten/pages, 70 Farbabbildungen/illustrations in color / 2 posters / vinyl record. - Situated at the interaction of art, architecture, music, mathematics, cosmology and science, Matthew Ritchie s The Morning Line is a 33-foot high sound pavilion, constructed in aluminum and conceived in part as a successor to Edgard Varèse and Le Corbusier s pavilion for the 1958 World s Fair, and Fritz Bornemann s Expo 70 Pavilion. Designed in collaboration with New York-based architects Aranda Lasch, the Arup Advanced Geometry Unit and the Music Research Centre of York University, the structure was inspired by the cosmological theories of Paul Steinhardt and Neil Turok, and offered a sonic environment in which newly commissioned works by well-known musicians were performed. This survey of the project includes a book containing Todd Eberle s photographs of the structure, a poster, a newspaper and a red vinyl LP with music by contemporary electronica musicians such as Alexej Borisov, Tommi Grönlund, Petteri Nisunen, Christian Fennesz, Carsten Nicolai, Zsolt Olejnik, Finnbogi Petursson, Franz Pomassl, Terre Thaemlitz and Zavoloka.
