C'est à cette époque en effet que se mettent en place certaines des caractérisations qui entérinent le partage des disciplines et éloignent le travail littéraire du travail des sciences : « épines des sciences » contre « fleurs de la littérature », froideur du géomètre contre enthousiasme du poète. Même si c'est pour affirmer qu'il faut les dépasser, le XIXe siècle contribue à fixer ces dichotomies. Le livre éclaire parfaitement le paradoxe de la poésie scientifique : « La recherche esthétique, lexicologique, rhétorique et syntaxique qui anime les poètes impose-t-elle à la vérité une forme de dégradation ? Par sa structure comme par le choix des textes, l'ouvrage insiste sur la diversité des liens entre la forme poétique et le savoir selon les siècles : lien mythique et originel entre le poète et le savant, mais aussi « antique querelle » entre les deux depuis Platon, qui bannit Homère de la cité idéale, tandis qu'Aristote refuse à l'écriture savante une place dans le champ poétique. C'est qu'on soupçonne la poésie d'user de son pouvoir de séduction dans un domaine qui doit moins charmer qu'instruire. Voltaire déclare ainsi : « Rien n'est plus déplacé que de parler de physique poétiquement, et de prodiguer les figures, les ornements, quand il ne faut que méthode, clarté et vérité ». Les processus de légitimation de ce rapprochement font dès lors partie du genre : il s'agit de mettre en poème des savoirs pour les ennoblir, pour les mémoriser, pour les diffuser, ou bien pour répondre à l'injonction horacienne de l'utile dulci. Selon les époques, les auteurs mettent en avant une indivision de la poésie et de la science, ou leur collaboration fructueuse. La valeur épistémologique d'Homère, de Virgile et d'Ovide peut ainsi être affirmée au moyen d'une interprétation allégorique de leurs textes. Déclarer que le savoir est présent sous le voile du mythe, c'est défendre la valeur intrinsèque de la poésie didactique comme genre spécifique, et raviver l'idéal du poète-philosophe, inspiré des dieux. L'étude identifie 1830 comme point de bascule : avant cette date, les savants sont encore avant tout des écrivains et des philosophes. Après cette date, l'extension du domaine de la science et sa fragmentation due à une plus grande spécialisation entraînent une distinction de plus en plus claire entre littérature et science, et parfois une hiérarchie au profit de la seconde. L'opposition de certains écrivains au scientisme ambiant (Bonald, Chateaubriand, Lamartine, Verlaine, pour ne citer que les plus fameux) entérine une rupture entre les deux camps, déjà engagée par la division des disciplines académiques et scolaires après la Révolution.
