The gradual way in which such information, as is given, has been acquired and the number of times that first impressions have had to give way to subsequent discoveries would be sufficient warning that this representation of the subject is little likely to be free from errors. His hope is that this study will do something to increase the interest already felt by many in the various religious sects that have been called into existence in India through the efforts of distinguished teachers. He has tried to avoid dogmatising on questions that call for fuller investigation; but we have at any rate in the teaching of Kabir an attempt to break down the barriers that separate Hindus from Muhammadans, and we have probably in the Kabir Panth a religious system that owes something to Hindu Muhammadan and Christian influences. If Christ had been an Indian, would not his Gospel have been welcomed by many who now refuse to listen? The writer has visited all places of interest in connection with the Panth, has introduced him to many Mahants and conducted inquiries with great intelligence. The Rev. Ahmad Shah, who is now engaged in bringing out an edition of the Bijak, has made many valuable suggestions and has also superintended the copying of various Kabir Panthi MSS. About the Author:-George Herbert Westcott (1862 1928) was the Bishop of Lucknow from 1910 until his death in 1928. He was born into a very distinguished clerical family: his father Brooke Westcott was Bishop of Durham from 1890 until 1901, and his younger brother Foss Westcott would be Bishop of Calcutta and Metropolitan of India from 1919 until 1945. He was educated at Marlborough College and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He was ordained in 1886 and, after a brief period as Chaplain at his old school, emigrated to India where he worked as a missionary with the SPG.
