Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. 101 pages. The book was written during a critical juncture in South African labor history—shortly after the 1973 Durban strikes, which saw widespread industrial action by Black workers demanding better wages and the right to unionise. • Economic Dualism: The authors examine the South African economy through the lens of economic dualism, discussing the co-existence of a commercialised industrial sector alongside a stagnant subsistence sector. Critics of the text have noted that it reflected the prevailing mid-1970s academic framework, sometimes attributing the economic disparities of Black workers to structural or cultural constraints rather than exclusively analyzing the legal restrictions imposed by the state. • The "Rate-for-the-Job" and White Protectionism: Leistner and Breytenbach document the complex socioeconomic mechanisms used by white-dominated trade unions and the state to protect white artisans. For instance, they highlight how enforcing equal pay regulations ("rate-for-the-job") ironically functioned to keep Black workers out of skilled industries unless minimum wage baselines were fundamentally shifted. Today, the work remains an important primary secondary source for researchers studying the intersection of Apartheid Labor Policies, corporate structures, and the economic history of Southern Africa. From the preface: "At present, few South African issues are being as widely discussed both at home and abroad as the position of Black workers in the country's economy, their earnings, bargaining power, job opportunities and related topics. Despite the far-reaching implications of this debate, there is little non-partisan, generally available background material of a factual nature. The present study is an attempt to provide a scholarly yet concise and readable survey of the basic facts and problems that deserve to be taken into account in an informed discussion of the issues at stake." || The book is on the shelf, ready to be appropriately packed, and posted from the pastoral paradise of Peasedown St. John, Bath, by a real bookseller in a real book shop - with my personal guarantee and beady eye on the Consumer Contracts Regulations.
