Peyton Wertenbaker, an air combat intelligence officer in the Pacific aboard the USS Suwanee whose experiences formed the basis for this book. Peyton was also one of the pioneers of Hugo Gernsback's development of "Scientifiction"--science fiction writing--until he abandoned it for other kinds of writing and journalistic endeavors.
