Dark leather boards are normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine rubbed. Gilt lettering and bordering overall bright and clean. Top and fore-edges gilt; normally dulled. Toning/off-setting to paste-downs and end-pages. Gift inscription found, in ink, on front end-page: "Will Mary please accept this book in remembrance of her beloved father who died April 2d 1858 - From your affectionate Mother, F. C. Clark, Dec. 25., 1858." Front gutter split at front fly-leaf; bottom piece of cording at tail split. Normal toning throughout text-bock; foxing around plates. Tissue guards moderately toned from plates. Binding intact. Please see photos. Gift books, literary annuals, or keepsakes were 19th-century books, often lavishly decorated, which collected essays, short fiction, and poetry. They were primarily published in the autumn, in time for the holiday season and were intended to be given away rather than read by the purchaser.
