Nowhere else on earth are there 47 square miles with drifting sand dunes, coastal prairie and coastal scrub plants, freshwater lakes, creeks, seeps and acquifers, oak woodlands, serpentine grasslands, perpendicular rock formations, saltwater estuaries, tidal marshes, and seven miles of beach facing the Pacific Ocean.
