Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Uri Gabbay presents a critical edition of the ancient Mesopotamian prayer of lamentation Oh, My Abzu! (a abzu-gu10) which belongs to the group of Balag prayers and is written in the Emesal register of the Sumerian language. This prayer has only been partially identified and addressed in previous research. The edition of the prayer is based on several cuneiform tablets and fragments from the first millennium BC, mainly from the cities of Nineveh, Babylon, and Uruk, as well as on a cuneiform tablet from Babylon dating back to the second millennium BC. Some of these tablets and fragments are published for the first time. The prayer includes laments about the destruction of the temples of the god Enki in the city of Eridu and of the god Asalluni in the city of Kuara. Gabbay offers a general discussion on the prayers and laments related to the god Enki, as well as on the image of this god in comparison to the god Enlil. In addition, the image of the lamenting goddess and other literary and theological themes that can be found in the prayers and laments of the god Enki are explored. Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. First edition. Octavo. xii, 360pp. Indices and 18 page bibliography. Red buckram lettered in yellow. A fine, as new copy. In The Exegetical Terminology of Akkadian Commentaries Uri Gabbay offers the first detailed study of the well-developed set of technical terms found in ancient Mesopotamian commentaries. Understanding the hermeneutical function of these terms is essential for reconstructing the ancient Mesopotamian exegetical tradition. Using the exegetical terminology attested in the large corpus of Akkadian commentaries from the first millennium BCE, the book addresses the hermeneutics of the commentaries, investigates the scholastic environment in which they were composed, and considers the relationship between the terminology of commentaries and the divine authority of the texts they elucidate. The book concludes with a comparative study that traces links between the terminology used in Akkadian commentaries and that used in early Hebrew exegesis. (Publisher) Contents: Introduction -- The Reality Behind Commentaries: Terms for Study, Discourse, Sources, and Compilation -- "What?": Interpretation Through Definition (Equation and Description) -- "How, Why?": Terms for Contextual Explanations -- Terms for the Nature of the Text and Hermeneutic Awareness -- The Verb qabu, "to say," in Akkadian Commentaries -- Conclusion. (OCLC) This is Volume 82 of the Brill series, "Culture and History of the Ancient Near East.".
