[From back cover] The Dohany street synagogue was built between 1854 and 1859 by Ludwig Forster to fit the needs of a progressive religious approach. The Building is spectacular primarily because of its monumental size and the elegance and richness of its interior design: this is the largest functioning synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world. The idea of an independent exhibition made up of mostly Jewish religios objects came up for the first time during the 1896 millennial celebrations, when the Jewish religion was presented among the historic religions of Hungary. The collection of about 1,500 pieces found its final home in 1932 in the building constructed next to the Dohany street synagogue. The institution currently operates under the auspices of the Alliance of Jewish Communities in Hungary. Its rich collection of Judaica makes it the second largest Jewish museum in Europe. The foreword of the book was written by retired Chief Rabbi Dr Jozsef Schweitzer. Contents include: Speaking Stones. Crying Stones; The Short History of the Dohány Street Synagogue; The Jewish Museum; The Brief History of the Jewish Museum; The Synagogue; The Torah; Shabbat; The Siddur (prayer book); The High Holy Days; Rosh Hashanah; Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement; The Feast of Tabernacles: Sukkoth; Pesach; The Feast of the Weeks: Shavouth; The Post-Torah Festivals; Purim; Chanukkah; Weekdays; Birth; Marriage; The Jewish Home; Farewell.
