This volume distinguishes itself by shifting the focus from abstract application to historical contextualization, illuminating the intellectual and sociopolitical foundations that shaped the Bakhtin Circle. For scholars in sociology, political theory, philosophy, literary studies, and Russian intellectual history, this collection offers indispensable tools for reengaging with Bakhtin's dialogical methods and their relevance to current theoretical debates. Interdisciplinary in scope, contributions traverse intellectual history, anthropology, aesthetics, linguistics, and political theory, pushing the boundaries of how Bakhtin's dialogism can be applied and understood. From Peter Hitchcock's opening chapter on globalization and the 'end of history' to Greg Nielsen's dialogue between Bakhtin and George Herbert Mead on reflexivity and democracy, the essays provide critical insights that bridge literary theory and social critique. Jean-François Côté offers a rare comparative study of Bakhtin and Hegel, while Galin Tihanov demonstrates how early Bakhtinian thought emerges from pre-Soviet German and Russian philosophical traditions. Craig Brandist's chapter posits an intriguing linkage between Bakhtin and Russian Populism, challenging assumptions about the Circle's ideological formation. Barry Sandywell aligns Bakhtin with Marx and Walter Benjamin, arguing for the materiality of discourse and its sociohistorical embeddedness. In a provocative reassessment, Michael Gardiner engages Bakhtin through the lens of Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological Marxism, pushing dialogism beyond purely literary confines into political and corporeal domains. Meanwhile, Chris Humphrey critiques the limitations of Bakhtin's carnival theory when used as a catch-all for cultural resistance, urging more nuanced historicist analysis. Vladimir Alpatov's concluding chapter historicizes Soviet linguistics and debunks the myth of a coherent Marxist-linguistic synthesis, grounding Bakhtin and his interlocutors in the complex terrain of early Soviet academic politics. The volume's title - Materializing Bakhtin - underscores its central aim: to foreground how Bakhtin's ideas become meaningful only through their embeddedness in social and historical processes. As Voloshinov emphasized, intellectual products must be activated within society to gain traction. This approach enables the collection to challenge both formalist and overly idealist interpretations of Bakhtin, emphasizing instead the political and epistemic work that dialogism performs. For researchers today, the book's significance is multifold. It revitalizes Bakhtin as a theorist not merely of language but of subjectivity, politics, and historical consciousness. It also serves as a model of interdisciplinary method, advocating for the dialogical integration of theoretical traditions, including neo-Kantianism, phenomenology, Marxism, and cultural studies. The book's commitment to dialogism as a mode of critique and understanding offers a compelling alternative to monologic and reductive thinking. Whether in rethinking the function of narrative and ideology, analyzing the political valence of carnival and polyphony, or historicizing the ethical underpinnings of discourse, this volume delivers a set of conceptual and methodological resources that remain urgent.…
