La linea narrativa ambientata nell'antica Cina tratta di una particolare fellatio, definita "sortilegio", che condiziona il comportamento umano; si conclude con una profezia. Quella ambientata nella Londra postbellica vede Keynes che, utilizzando fantasiose metafore, racconta le sue teorie a Gwyneth, "sua nipote virtuale", conosciuta casualmente in Regent's Park. Il ritrovamento di un antico libretto cinese, e del diario di Gwyneth, dà il via alla linea narrativa principale che vede l'interpretazione, la verifica e la messa in atto della profezia con l'obiettivo finale di migliorare il nostro mondo. Solo il finale svela la natura magica e misteriosa della trama: l'uscita dalla dimensione onirica nella quale tutte le protagoniste hanno vissuto le vicende narrate le riporta alla cruda realtà.
