This measurement, referenced to the pipe top, gives the elevation of the sand above mean sea level. The author compares the results of the pipe surveys to those of traditional surveys and finds good agreement on several profiles, but the agreement on others is uncertain. The author also examines the beach profiles, looking at the shape of the profile, changes in sand elevation, and the relation of those changes to wave climate and beach characteristics.
