Aggiungi al carrellohardcover. Condizione: very good. first edition. In-8° relié, Gama Da Machado (1775-1861) fut envoyé à Paris à l'âge de huit ans pour faire ses études au Collège d'Harcourt. Il mena une vie de voyageur et s'entoura, dans son appartement du quai Voltaire à Paris, des curiosités d'histoire naturelle glanées au cours de ses voyages…, et surtout de nombreuses espèces d'oiseaux, qu'il adorait et auxquels il apportait tous les soins. Les observant chaque jour, il élabora sa Théorie des ressemblances, en se basant sur l'idée que la couleur des êtres peut fournir des caractères précis. Elle serait selon lui véritable "pilote de la nature". Machado refusait ainsi l'examen de la structure interne des animaux, étant persuadé que ce qui importait le plus se trouvait dans leur apparence, leur couleurs et leur forme. En tant que disciple de Gall, il refusait l'idée de libre arbitre dans le comportement des animaux, comme dans celui de l'homme ; la ressemblance de certains animaux avec une espèce totalement différente serait, en revanche, propre à expliquer toutes les comportements de la nature. D'après ces principes, Machado parvient à produire des démonstrations pour le moins surprenantes : Pourquoi un ouistiti peut-il plonger la tête la première dans un bocal à poissons rouges ? À cause de sa ressemblance avec le chat. Pourquoi le lièvre et l'écureuil émettent-ils le même grognement ? C'est la ressemblance entre leurs têtes qui en est l'explication. Comment se fait-il que le lièvre ait le même souci de propreté que le grand toiletteur qu'est le chat ? C'est dans la douceur et la brillance de leur pelage qu'il faut chercher la raison. Pourquoi la tortue, qui est pourtant de forme massive, s'évertue t-elle toujours à grimper aux murs tels un lézard ? Parce qu'elle en a la tête ; et l'auteur d'affirmer que chez cette même tortue, les pattes sont ridées comme chez l'éléphant et que là est l'explication de la similitude de leur marche. Les mêmes analogies ont court entre les animaux et les plantes. Citons par exemple celui qu'il donne au sujet de la fritillaire et du serpent : la fritillaire à damier produit un parfum acre qui semble dire "Evitez mon odeur", de la même manière que le serpent langaha de Madagascar semble dire "Redoutez mon venin" ; or, tous deux sont de la même couleur, constate Machado.
