Cloth, 8vo, 416 pp, 50 colour plates. From the blurb: "One of the greatest literary centres throughout the Middle Ages, Canterbury still preserves - despite horrendous losses - a significant collection of medieval manuscripts. In this book Professor Richard Gameson has described and discussed all Canterbury's pre-thirteenth-century manuscripts for the first time. Each manuscript is illustrated in colour, several with more than one image. Highlights range from the oldest copies of the Alfredian translation of Gregory the Great's Dialogues, and of Lanfranc's gloss on the Epistles, through fine liturgica, to an extraordinarily grand copy of Peter Comestor's Historia Scholartica. Lucid and very detailed descriptions are complemented by broad-ranging analyses that explain the significance of these works in general and of the Canterbury copies in particular. In a substantial introduction Professor Gameson traces the history of book-production in Kent and Canterbury up to c. 1200, follows the development and use of the Canterbury collections in the later Middle Ages, and discusses the fate of these books at the Reformation." Fine in a Near Very Good dustwrapper with a touch of wear.

Cloth, 4to, 530 pp, ills. From the preface: "Despite their interest and variety, the medieval manuscripts of Trinity College, Oxford, are not well known as a collection for the simple reason that there has hitherto been no thorough account of them. The present comprehensive catalogue meets that need. It provides full, analytical descriptions of all the pre-Reformation codices - ninety-four volumes which, as many are composite, represent some 130 medieval books or booklets - plus more summary accounts of the manuscript fragments that survive as pastedowns in the college's early printed books. (Manuscripts post-dating 1540 or of Eastern origin are not included.). The Introduction first traces the history of the collection (supported by appendices that provide editions of the most important book-lists), and then discusses items of particular interest for their codicology, content, script, decoration, medieval provenance, or post- medieval use. In addition to an Index of Content (which includes all identifiable authors and texts, plus incipits of anonymous works and of short texts such as apothegms, prayers, and verses), there are indices of Iconography, of Cited Manuscripts in other Collections, and of Provenance. John Whytefelde (whose hand appears in MS. 59) hoped that the remarkably meticulous catalogue of manuscripts that he drew up in the fourteenth century would 'ad solicitam lectionis frequenciam fratres studiosos prouocet': the present author will be satisfied if his own work should have that same result."
