Nació el 4 de marzo de 1904 en Odessa, Rusia. Su padre era un profesor de escuela de enseñanza secundaria. Muy temprano, en sus años de escolar se fascinó por la astronomía y, cuando cumplió sus trece años de edad, su padre le regaló su primer telescopio, con el cual estudió pacientemente las estrellas. Ya entonces afloraban en él sus dotes de científico. - En 1922, da inicio a sus estudios universitarios. Primero en la Universidad de Novorossia, en su ciudad natal. Después, en 1923, ingresa a la Universidad de Petrogrado(ahora Leningrado) donde estudia óptica y cosmología, egresando de ese establecimiento de enseñanza superior el año 1928. En 1926, asiste a la escuela de verano de la Universidad de Göttingen en Alemania. Ya, en ese tiempo, su formación era sólida y podía dar respuestas y soluciones demostrables a diez misteriosos fenómenos de la radiactividad natural. Como ejemplo, podemos señalar entre otros, la formulación que desarrolló de la teoría cuántica de la radiactividad, la primera explicación acertada del comportamiento de los elementos radiactivos, algunos de los cuales decaen en segundos, mientras que otros lo hacen en miles de años. Gamow consiguió un significativo avance de la investigación en Göttingen. Utilizando las teorías ondulatorias de Schrödinger, demostró que las partículas, en ciertos estados excitados de energía, pueden, a todos los efectos, abrirse camino hasta fuera del núcleo.
