Reconnues et explorées dès la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle, ces nécropoles doivent leur notoriété aux fouilles que conduisit entre 1898 et 1931 Maurice Piroutet sur les groupes de tumulus de la forêt des Moidons et du bois de Parançot. À l'exception de quelques articles préliminaires, ces ensembles de référence n'avaient donné lieu à aucune publication exhaustive. Des fouilles de sauvetage conduites en 1992 et 1993 sur deux tumulus de la nécropole du bois de Parançot à Mesnay et sur deux tertres des champs des Lavières à Chilly-sur-Salins, en lisière de la forêt des Moidons, sont venues réactualiser et compléter les données anciennes. Sans reprendre dans le détail l'étude de l'habitat voisin du camp du Château à Salins, cet ouvrage offre l'opportunité d'en dresser un bilan documentaire. Il permet de replacer les nécropoles des Moidons dans la perspective de l'évolution de ce site fortifié qui se range aux VIe-Ve siècles av. J.-C. parmi les quinze pôles princiers du domaine nord-alpin occidental. L'inventaire illustré des sépultures et de plus de 500 objets composant le mobilier funéraire déposé au Musée des Antiquités nationales à Saint-Germain-en-Laye et au Musée d'archéologie de Lons-le-Saunier, constitue une base documentaire anthropologique et archéologique de référence.
