Aggiungi al carrello6 works in 1 volume. A rare early 16th-century convolute from the press of Simon Corver, the pioneering Lutheran printer of Zwolle. Corver, a former monk exiled from Amsterdam for his Lutheran sympathies, established the Officina Corveriana in Zwolle around 1519 under the patronage of Gerardus Listrius, rector of the local Latin school and a notable supporter of the Reformation. Corver published numerous works promoting Reformed theology during his brief period of activity in Zwolle (ca. 1519-1522), before fleeing the city due to mounting pressure.Ad 1: Wessel Gansfort (ca. 1419-1489) treatise De Sacramento Eucharistiae et audienda Missa. Gansfort, a Groningen-born theologian and alumnus of Zwolle's Latin school, had studied and lectured extensively across Europe, including Cologne, Heidelberg, and Paris. His writings, regarded as emblematic of biblical humanism, were admired by prominent figures in the Reformation such as Luther, and his treatises were particularly sought after by early Lutheran printers like Corver. De Sacramento Eucharistiae et audienda Missa presents Gansfort's theological reflections on the Eucharist and the celebration of Mass, emphasising the real presence of Christ and the profound spiritual efficacy of devout faith. Ad 2: Controversial theological letters of Gansfort. The ornate title page announces a series of polemical epistles exchanged between Gansfort and several prominent theologians of his day, including Engelbert of Leiden, Jacobus Hoeck, and Joannes of Amsterdam. The Impugnatorium M. Antonis de Castro . contra Weselum is bound at the end of the present collective volume. This is a polemical treatise written shortly after Wessel's death at the request of Hoeck, addressing Wessel's letter on indulgences. Printed in the margins are critical annotations defending Wessel's positions, making the text a vivid example of early 16th-century theological debate. The work highlights disputes over indulgences, the "treasures of merits," and the authority of the papacy, showing both Wessel's reformist-leaning views and the Dominican defence of traditional church teaching.Ad 3: Gansfort's treatise on Christian prayer, comprising two principal parts, De Oratione & Modo Orandi, a theoretical and practical guide to the nature and proper performance of prayer, with instruction on the inner dispositions appropriate to devotion; and Dominicæ Orationis Explanatione, a detailed commentary on the Pater Noster, explicating the significance of each clause and deriving spiritual lessons therefrom. Ad 4: The most important of Gansfort's theological works, gathering six treatises on central doctrinal themes: De benignissima Dei providentia, De causis, mysteriis, & effectibus Dominicae incarnationis & passionis, De dignitate & potestate ecclesiastica, De sacramento penitentiae, Quae sit vera communio sanctorum, and De purgatorio, concluding with four letters. It includes Gansfort's reflections on confession, purgatory, ecclesiastical authority, and the sacraments, showing his nuanced position: while some ideas anticipate aspects of Protestant thought, Gansfort remained a devout Catholic, affirming free will, the efficacy of the sacraments, and the primacy of the pope.Ad 5: Posthumous second edition of the works of Johann Pupper (ca. 1410-1475), also known as Johannes van Goch, a Dutch Augustinian and early church reformer. Closely associated with the Modern Devotion and the Brethren of the Common Life, Pupper opposed Pelagianism and emphasised the Bible as the sole source of religious truth. Ad 6: Rare treatise on the authority, office, and powers of ecclesiastical pastors. Occasionally attributed to Gansfort it examines the scope and limits of clerical authority, the responsibilities of church leaders, and their relationship to the laity. The title page includes a verse critical of princes and high-ranking church officials who pursue personal gain at the expense of their flock. The final leaf contains an added appendix, Conclusiones aliquot doctiss. M. Philippi Melanctonis, by the noted reformer Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560).With a manuscript list of the works in this sammelband written on a separate sheet of paper and pasted onto the front pastedown. Occasional underlining and marginal annotations, referring to or commenting on the text. The binding is rubbed, the spine slightly damaged, and one clasp is missing. Some minor browning and staining throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Ad 1: Akkerman, Huisman and Vanderjagt, Wessel Gansfort (1419-1489) and Northern Humanism, Brill's Studies in Intellectual History; BM STC Dutch p. 210; Hermans, Zwolse boeken voor een markt zonder grenzen 1477-1523; Nijhoff-Kronenberg 2204; Post, The Modern Devotion (1968), Confrontation with Reformation and Humanism; STCN 104048107 (3 copies); USTC 421027; WorldCat 250689811 (3 copies); cf. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst and only edition of Wessel Gansfort's collected works, in which many of his letters and several of his ascetic works were published for the first time. Gansfort, often considered a forerunner of the Reformation, emphasised the importance of Scripture as a main source and authority in religious matters, rather than Church traditions and hierarchies. Although he had been a devout Catholic during his lifetime, his work resonated with Protestant thinkers and was placed on the Index. The present edition was produced with the goal to preserve his writings, as many of them had previously circulated only in manuscript form, making it a significant monument to early reformist thought in the Low Countries. The present edition contains all of Gansfort's writings, and a biographical sketch by the protestant preacher Albert Hardenberg. It starts with De oration et modo orandi (on prayer and the manner of praying); followed by the Tractatus de cohibendis cogitationibus qui Scala Meditationis vocatur (Treatise on keeping thoughts in check and the manner of constructing meditations, not published before); De causis incarnationis. De magnitudine & amaritudine Dominis Passionis (on the causes of the incarnation); and De Sacramento Eucharistiae et audienda Missa (on the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the hearing of the Mass). A collection of several treatises follows under the title Farrago theologicarum, which are important for Wessel's personal ideas, quoting from classical authors as Proclus and Plato. At the end are his letters, partly published here for the first time.A selection from his writings, the Farrago, was issued at Zwolle in 1521 (reprint Wittenberg, 1522 and Basle, 1522 containing a commendatory preface by Luther). Shortly after 1521, De oratione et modo orandi and De Sacramento Eucharistiae were published in Zwolle. Gansfort's works were placed on the Index in the 1520s and not published again until the present edition. With the library stamp of the "Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Amsterdam" on the title page, and contemporary annotations on the verso of the first and last free flyleaf. The vellum is slightly soiled and bumped, the front hinge is somewhat weakened, but the structural integrity of the binding is still intact. The title page is somewhat soiled, occasional foxing, a water stain in the lower corner on some of the leaves and in the upper margin throughout, not affecting any text. Otherwise in good condition.l STCN 822940884; USTC 1026128; cf. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst German edition of the first collection of Wessel Gansfort's important and influential writings on theology, issued only a couple of months after the original edition (Zwolle, Simon Corver, beginning of 1522). The present edition bears no date on the title page or in the colophon, but the preliminary note by Andreas Palaeosphyra is dated [15]22, so the work is believed to have been published in that year. The volume was edited by Johann Arnold from Marktbergel in Mittelfranken, who was a corrector at the Lotter office, and who dedicated this edition to the well-known humanist and reformer Andreas Althamer. The beautiful woodcut border on the title page has been attributed to Lucas Cranach the Elder, and is not present in other editions.Wessel Gansfort (1419-1489), also known as Johan Wessel, was born in Groningen in the northernmost part of the Netherlands. He was one of the earliest theologians of the Low Countries to begin to embrace humanism and to call for reform of the Church. In the wake of Martin Luther and the Reformation, Protestants published this first collection of his writings, presenting him as one of their forerunners. Although Gansfort never advocated separating from the Catholic Church, believed in free will, did not accept justification by faith alone, and did not reject the sacraments in principle, many of his views did anticipate those of the Protestants. He was deeply spiritual, lamented what he saw as the increasingly pagan style of the papacy and the superstitious presentation of sacraments as magic, and denied the infallibility of the Pope and other Church authorities.Gansfort studied in Zwolle, where he had close ties to the Brethren of the Common Life, as well as the nearby monastery of Mount St. Agnes, where Thomas a Kempis then lived. He left the Low Countries in 1449, studying and teaching in Cologne, Paris, Rome, Venice, Basel, and Heidelberg. Reuchlin was one of his students. In the late 1470s he returned to the monasteries in Groningen and Zwolle, remaining there for the rest of his life. Now a renowned scholar, he helped determine the direction of these influential monasteries. The present volume contains six of his theological treatises: 1) De benignissima dei providentia; 2) De causis misteriis, & effectibus dominicae incarnationis & passionis; 3) De dignitate & potestate ecclesiastica; 4) De sacramento penitentiae; 5) Quae sit vera communio sanctorum; and 6) De purgatorio. After being published in Zwolle in 1522, the collection was also published in Basel by Adam Petri in 1523. Luther, who wrote a preliminary note for this edition of the Farrago, noted that if he himself had written nothing before reading Gansfort, people might have supposed he took all his ideas from him. In the sixteenth century Gansfort's writings were placed on the Index of prohibited books. He certainly stands as a leading figure who helped prepare the way for the Reformation. With contemporary glosses and underlinings on most leaves.
