"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is the quintessential American fairy tale. Michael Patrick Hearn (the world's leading Oz scholar) provides a fascinating new annotation that not only reacquaints readers w/ the Tin Woodman, Scarecrow, & Cowardly Lion, but also illuminates the colorful background of this American classic. This edition explores numerous contemporary references, provides character sources, & explains the actual meaning of the word "Oz." A facsimile of the rare 1900 first edition appears w/ the orig. drawings by W.W. Denslow, as well as 25 previously unpublished illustrations. There is a bibliography of L. Frank Baum's published work, every notable "Oz" edition, & the stage & cinematic productions from 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" to the 1974 Broadway hit "The Wiz". A beautiful, awe-inspiring work, "The Annotated Wizard of Oz" is an enduring tribute to the timeless joy of "The Wizard of Oz", & a classic to rival Baum's own. * ABOUT THE AUTHOR: L. FRANK BAUM (1856-1919) was an American author, poet, playwright, actor, & independent filmmaker best known today as the creator (along with illustrator W.W. Denslow) of one of the most popular books in American children's literature, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". He wrote 13 "Oz" sequels, 9 other fantasy novels, & a plethora of other works, & brought several of his works to the stage and screen. His is known to his fans as "The Royal Historian of Oz." / MICHAEL PATRICK HEARN has written for the NYT, The Nation, & many other publications. His books include "From the Silver Age to Stalin: Russian Children's Book Illustration" & "The Porcelain Cat"; he has edited "The Victorian Fairy Tale Book", "The Annotated Wizard of Oz", "The Annotated Christmas Carol", & "The Annotated Huckleberry Finn". Hearn lives in New York City. / W.W. DENSLOW (1856-1915) was a prolific illustrator, cartoonist, & caricaturist, best remembered for his work in collaboration with author L. Frank Baum, especially his illustrations of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", the first of the "Oz" books. An editorial cartoonist w/ a strong interest in politics, Denslow also illustrated his own books including "Denslow's Mother Goose" (1901), "Denslow's Night Before Christmas" (1902) and the 18-volume "Denslow's Picture Books" series (1903-4). The royalties from the print & stage versions of "The Wizard of Oz" were sufficient to allow Denslow to purchase Bluck's Island in Bermuda, & crown himself King Denslow I. However, he drank his money away & died in obscurity, of pneumonia. / MARTIN GARDNER (1914-2010) is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on Lewis Carroll & his work. The author of more than 100 books, he wrote the "Mathematical Games" column for Scientific American for 25 yrs & has been hailed by Douglas Hofstadter as "one of the great intellects produced in this country in this century." * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a nominal additional fee & via efficient USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL to all international shipments at our posted rates. No narrative poem has rivaled it in combining scenes of terror with scenes of incomparable beauty. Although enormously popular in the nineteenth century, it is seldom read or studied today. This annotated version by Martin Gardner will help to renew the appreciation and deepen the understanding of Coleridge's unjustly neglected masterpiece.Preceding the poem is a biographical sketch of the great poet, which emphasizes those aspects of his many-sided life and personality that have the strongest bearing on the poem, especially on circumstances surrounding its composition. Both the 1798 and 1834 versions of the poem are presented, with notes on words, lines, and stanzas that Coleridge later excised. Following the poem, Gardner summarizes major critical attitudes toward the ballad, discusses possible higher levels of meaning, and closes with questions concerning the poem's much-debated moral. Many artists have illustrated the Rime, but none as skillfully as Gustave Dore. He was far and away the most popular and prolific book illustrator of all time, and though his work has been out of fashion for some time, it is becoming harder and harder to dismiss him as a mere yeoman illustrator. Here is your chance to read, or reread, Coleridge's classic Rime, to fully understand it, and to relish Dore's magnificent illustrations.
