Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book recounts the harrowing experiences of the author, a young girl who witnessed the brutal Spirit Lake Massacre of 1857. The massacre occurred on the frontier of Iowa, where settlers had ventured in search of new opportunities and a fresh start. The authorââ â¢s vivid first-hand account captures the anxieties and uncertainties of life on the frontier, where the fragile peace between settlers and Native Americans could be shattered in an instant. The author weaves a deeply personal narrative of family life, pioneer struggles, and the ever-present threat of violence. Through her eyes, we experience the unsettling encounters with Native American tribes, the growing sense of unease, and the ultimate horror of the massacre. The book delves into the complexities of this tragic chapter in American history, providing a unique and intimate perspective on the devastating impact of conflict on individual lives. The author's account offers a poignant reminder of the human cost of westward expansion and the need for understanding and empathy in navigating intercultural relations. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Aggiungi al carrello[SPIRIT LAKE MASSACRE]. First Edition. First Issue. Green decorative-cloth, with Title and Author in gilt on spine. Frontis Portrait of Abbie Gardner-Sharp. Preface. Appendix. 312pp. Over a 5 day period in March, 1857, fifteen Santee Sioux Indians of the Wahpekute band, led by the renegade chief Ink-pa-du-tah, attacked the homes of several settlers in northwestern Iowa, on the shores of Spirit and Okoboji lakes. They brutally killed 35-40 settlers and carried away 4 young women into captivity. Only 13 years old, Abigail Gardner was the youngest of the captives. She witnessed the killing of her family and endured 3 months of captivity before being ransomed. Her firsthand account of this tragedy is a classic. Some light rubbing to edges. Small tape-repair to upper fore-corner of one page, not affecting text. Small scar from erasure of previous owners name on front free endpaper. Very good+. While the Second Issue of this classic book is quite scarce, this First Issue is truly rare, and the first copy that we've offered.…
