Tadellos. 1837 erfolgte die erste Lieferung der 'Real-Encyclöpädie der classischen Alterthumswissenschaft in alphabetischer Reihenfolge' durch August Pauly (1796 - 1845). Pauly konnte noch das Lemma 'Juno' bearbeiten. Nach seinem Tod übernahmen Chr. Walz und W.…S. Teuffel die Herausgeberschaft und konnten 1849 das Werk mit Bd. VI, Abtl. 2 mit einem Umfang von nahezu 11.000 Seiten mit Hilfe von 53 Mitarbeitern abschließen. 1864 - 66 erfolgte noch eine Neubarbeitung des 1. Bandes durch Teuffel. Eine Wiederaufnahme und vollständige Überarbeitung begann Georg Wissowa 1890 mit einem Stab von von über hundert Mitarbeitern. Bis 1909 wurden die ersten 12 Halbände (bis Fornaces) ediert. Fortsetzung ab 1909 für 30 Jahre durch Wilhelm Kroll unter der Verlagsägide von Alfred Druckenmüller bis Bd. 35 bzw. 37/38 (bis Orpheus bzw. Philon). 1911 Anlage der 2. Reihe ab R ff. zuerst durch Karl Witte, gefolgt von Karl Mittelhaus, der nach Krolls Tod 1939 auch die 1. Reihe bis 'Pax' und die 2. Reihe bis 'Tyrrhener' (14. Halbband 1943) weiterführen konnte. Die Zerstörung von Verlagshaus und Druckerei in Stuttgart im Oktober 1943 samt den Lagerbeständen der RE sowie der Verlust der Redaktionsakten bei Mittelhaus in Breslau im Januar 1945 und dessen Tod ein Jahr später stellen das vorläufige Ende dieser wechselvollen Editionstradition dar. Die Wiederaufnahme erfolgte noch im Frühjahr durch Konrat Ziegler, die ersten Bände nach dem Krieg folgten dann ab Ende 1948. Bis zu seinem Lebensjahr 1974 blieb er Herausgeber und wurde dann von Hans Gärtner abgelöst, der die RE 1980 zum Abschluß brachte. [Pauly - Wissowa [Realencyclopädie [RE]] - ] 120000 gr.
