For example, he was the first historian to question whether the fighting in the Hornet's Nest was really critical to the outcome of the battle (he concludes it was not); the first to challenge publicly whether more than a dozen different assaults were really launched against the Sunken Road position (he could only confirm seven); and the first to conclude that Daniel Ruggles' artillery~studded line did not have sixty~two Confederate pieces (Ruggles had at most 51 cannon). Dr. Cunningham spent as much ink on the western side of the battlefield around the Crossroads (where the Hamburg~Purdy and Corinth~Pittsburg roads intersect) as he did on any other part of the field. His path~breaking work in that sector turned Shiloh historiography on its head.
