No Binding. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. [Berkeley, CA]: [Stooge], [1971]. 20 unbound sheets of card and paperstock, mostly 8.5 x 11 in., silk-screened primarily to rectos in various colors; 8 small printed cards. Housed as issued in a portfolio fashioned from a flattened pizza box, silk-screened to both covers and interior. The uncommon fifth issue of this little mag founded by Allen Schiller, co-edited by Geoff Young (who later shared editing duties with Laura Chester, before the pair left in 1975 to found long-running small press The Figures). This issue notable for its rather unconventional format, as well as for the inclusion of "An Answer to a Critic of Sorts" by Charles Bukowski (Krumhansl 37) and an unattributed version of "Riprap" by Gary Snyder (McNeil A34). (Though Krumhansl's entry is not terribly helpful, McNeil usefully supplies Berkeley and 1971, and also cites an edition size of 200 copies, though admits to having handled only Snyder's broadside. Other contributors include Jack Shoemaker, Howard McCord, James Holmstrand, D. Johnson, Ken Maytag, Chuck Lee, Ken Weston, David Till, William Witherup, Fred Cooper, Stan Rice, and Al Masarik. Contents near fine, with some crimping to upper left corners. Portfolio moderately rubbed and worn, lacking original purple string tie.

Tabloid. Condizione: Good. Tabloid newsprint journal. Approximately 15 by 11 1/2 inches. Psychedelic art on the rear cover by artist Rick Griffin. 52 pp. Color psychedelic illustrations throughout. Edited by Allen Cohen, The Oracle was known for is psychedelic designs and promotion of the counterculture/hippie lifestyle as experienced through the use of psychedelic drugs and Aquarian philosophy. It was designed at the Psychedelic Shop in Haight Ashbury, and published only 12 issues before ceasing publication, partially due to the belief that hippie culture was connected to mainstream consumer culture (see Heller, Merz to Émigré and Beyond pp. 190-191). This number with a lengthy piece printing the conversation and commentary of Allen Ginsberg, Timothy Leary, Gary Snyder and Allan Watts on whether to drop out or take over, touching on drug use, sex, spirituality, etc., and spanning 17 pages. This includes a front cover photo of the group, as well as photos in the interior. With another piece discussing William Burroughs and his views on drugs; articles on psychedelic and New Age spirituality, as well as poetry by Gary Snyder etc. GOOD condition. General toning, wrinkling and creasing. Minor soiling and some faint stains to the covers. A few small tears and chips along the edges, with a larger tear at the lower center rear cover.
