Après avoir quitté l'armée pour des raisons de santé, il se consacra à la peinture, suivant les cours de maîtres tels qu'Ernest Meissonier et Édouard Detaille. Il exposa au Salon…des artistes français et obtint une mention honorable en 1885. Son uvre la plus célèbre est La Charge d'Alincourt, une toile représentant un épisode de la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870, actuellement déposée à la Cour d'appel de Montpellier. Publié en 1895, cet ouvrage est à la fois un témoignage vivant et une uvre artistique dédiée à la vie quotidienne des élèves de l'École polytechnique à la fin du XIXe siècle. Claris, ancien élève de la promotion 1863 (X 1863), y mêle ses talents d'illustrateur et de narrateur pour offrir une immersion unique dans l'univers de l'École. Le livre se distingue par sa richesse iconographique : 410 pages accompagnées de nombreuses illustrations en noir et blanc, ainsi que 8 planches en couleurs représentant des uniformes et des scènes de la vie polytechnicienne. Claris y dépeint avec précision les aspects du quotidien des élèves : les cours, les traditions, les loisirs, les uniformes, et même l'argot spécifique à l'École. L'ouvrage est moins centré sur l'histoire institutionnelle que sur le vécu des élèves, ce qui en fait une source précieuse pour comprendre l'esprit et les coutumes de l'époque. Publié en 1895 par Librairies imprimeries réunies, reliure plein tissus de l' éditeur dans un état moyen avec un dos lisse et des plats ornés de pièce de titre et de symboles de l' Ecole Polytechnique dorée , intérieur en bon état, format 33x26x3,5 cm, 410 pages.
