Après avoir quitté l'armée pour des raisons de santé, il se consacra à la peinture, suivant les cours de maîtres tels qu'Ernest Meissonier et Édouard Detaille. Il exposa au Salon des artistes français et obtint une mention honorable en 1885. Son uvre la plus célèbre est La Charge d'Alincourt, une toile représentant un épisode de la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870, actuellement déposée à la Cour d'appel de Montpellier. Publié en 1895, cet ouvrage est à la fois un témoignage vivant et une uvre artistique dédiée à la vie quotidienne des élèves de l'École polytechnique à la fin du XIXe siècle. Claris, ancien élève de la promotion 1863 (X 1863), y mêle ses talents d'illustrateur et de narrateur pour offrir une immersion unique dans l'univers de l'École.
