Cousin de Frédéric DuBois. ? 1833 Lina Bernardine Humbert-Droz. Etudes de droit à Paris (1825-1828), Ecole des chartes (1828-1830). Banni de Neuchâtel en 1831 pour avoir critiqué le régime monarchique, G. poursuit son activité de publiciste aux côtés des progressistes, à Porrentruy en tant que rédacteur de L'Helvétie (1832-1845), puis à Lausanne au Nouvelliste vaudois (1837-1845); parallèlement, il enseigne le droit et collabore à plusieurs périodiques. Brouillé avec Henri Druey à la suite de la révolution vaudoise, il s'installe en 1847 à Genève, où il est professeur d'histoire à l'académie (1848-1859) et secrétaire général de l'Institut national genevois dont il est un des fondateurs. Il est l'auteur de La Suisse historique et pittoresque (avec Charles Schaub, 1855-1856), d'un essai sur la littérature de la Suisse française au XVIIIe s. (1856) et du tome 4 (1803-1830) de l'Histoire du canton de Vaud d'Auguste Verdeil (1857).
