"Volney : Un Grand Temoin de la Revolution et de l' Empire" by Jean Gaulmier is an historical and biographical study of the great French philosopher - statesman, Constantine François, Comte de Volney. Volney was born surnamed Boisgirais, but, as an adult, adopted the name Volney, which was his own coinage : a melding of Voltaire and Ferney. Volney was a well-versed historian, an ardent and out-spoken abolitionist; he was also an Orientalist, who learned Sanskrit and Arabic for his studies and was to write a number of works on the Near East. Comte de Volney is best known for his influential and controversial book, "Ruins of Empire". Volney visited the United States and became friends with Vice-President Thomas Jefferson, who promised to undertake an English translation of "Ruins of Empire". This was done in secret because Jefferson thought the book's religious content too controversial for general readership. "Ruins of Empire" posited that enlightened self-interest allowed for empires to flourish beneficently. Volney also posited the idea that all the various religions of the earth provoked disunity, and stated that an enlightened state should only exist with a solid separation of state and church. Volney wrote about an imagined "General Assembly of Nations"! It would be hard to over-estimate the importance of Volney to the development of political philosophy.
