Seconde charnière fendue, quelques traces d'usage sans gravité ; intérieur très frais. Spirituel canular littéraire et poétique autour d'une société secrète, illustré de nombreux dessins, dans le milieu étudiant d'Alger à la fin du XIXe siècle. Ce manuscrit a été entièrement recopié et illustré par la même main, celle de Pierre Gavault qui se désigne sous le terme d'« enlumineur » (p. xxiiii). Il débute par un feuillet portant en guise de titre la phrase suivante, calligraphiée en lettres gothiques et ornée de lettrines : « Ce livre a esté escript par Messire Pierre Gavault et très sçavants et Nobles Seigneurs Lys du Pac et Victor de Cottens A[nno] - D[omini] mdccclxxxii ». Chaque titre de partie et de sous-partie est également calligraphié, illustré en couleurs et rehaussé de peinture dorée. Tout le texte est décoré de lettrines et culs-de-lampe. Le Livre premier (« Une lecture sans titre, iii et xvii de mars mdccclxxxi ») contient le récit de la découverte fictive des archives d'« une société sans nom » : au milieu de vieux papiers achetés 25 sous au marché de la place de Chartres à Alger, le narrateur déniche les documents d'une mystérieuse société : procès-verbaux, rapports, compte rendus, interpellations, discours, projets, professions de foi, propositions, etc. Piqué de curiosité, il décide d'en reconstituer pour le lecteur l'histoire et le fonctionnement. Comme le révèlent les clefs indiquées en notes à la fin de ce premier livre, cette « société sans nom » est une parodie de la société Concordia, société littéraire et artistique très active à Alger à la fin du XIXe siècle parmi les lycéens et élèves des écoles supérieures, dont Pierre Gavault et ses amis Victor de Cottens et Lys du Pac étaient membres. La société fictive est constituée d'un président, d'un secrétaire, d'un trésorier, d'un vice-président, d'un secrétaire-adjoint et d'un archiviste. Les autres membres sont des statues de cire qui, pendant les débats, sont actionnées par des mécanismes. Le but de la société est « de donner de temps en temps de grandes représentations ». Le narrateur présente tour à tour les membres vivants de la société : Paul Rougeaud, dit Gros-Bibi (i.e. Paul Gonzalès), M. Dubloc (i.e. E. et G. Mojon), M. Heit), Yungmann (Kuhlmann). « Ici Messieurs, les pièces manquent, les archives s'arrêtent, et je suis obligé de faire comme elles. Le dernier procès-verbal est celui du 45 Février 18. Jusqu'à ce jour, la Société a duré près de deux ans C'est bien jeune pour mourir ! » « Pour copie conforme : Pierre Gavault ». Le Livre second, sous-titré : « Le dossier n° cccxxiii », est la suite de la « Lecture sans titre ». Au dépôt des manuscrits de la bibliothèque d'Alger, le narrateur retrouve le reste des archives de la société, dans un dossier numéroté 323 : « l'antiquité de ces documents me terrifia : ils remontaient au XIXe siècle avant Jésus-Christ ! ». Mais chaque fois qu'il revient pour tenter de dépouiller les documents, le conservateur surgit et le dérange dans son travail pour lui montrer quelque chose : « Pour moi, je suis bien obligé de flatter ses manies : s'il venait à m'interdire l'entrée de la salle du dossier 323 ! » Le Livre III, intitulé « Les Châtiments », est un recueil de poèmes : [I]. Epitaphe. Il s'ouvre sur un feuillet de titre illustré en rouge et gris, orné d'un grand encadrement architecturé et de motifs grotesques. Chaque poème est décoré par un en-tête et un cul-de-lampe. L'auteur de ce manuscrit est Pierre Gavault (1864-1895), qui devint plus tard architecte à Alger. Après avoir étudié aux Beaux-Arts, il fut nommé inspecteur des bâtiments départementaux d'Alger et chargé d'effectuer les premières fouilles archéologiques de la ville romaine de Tigzirt, mission inachevée en raison de sa mort précoce. Il publia des poèmes sous le pseudonyme de Pierre Loÿs dans une revue fondée par lui et son frère Paul, homme de théâtre et directeur de l'Odéon à Paris. Ses complices Victor de Cottens et Lys du Pac s'orientèrent tous deux vers le journalisme. Cottens (1862-1956) apporta sa contribution au Soir et au Figaro en tant que critique de théâtre, et écrivit de nombreuses pièces en collaboration avec Paul Gavault. Lys du Pac (1859?1923) demeura à Alger et devint rédacteur en chef à la Dépêche Algérienne.
