Gardner's novel "Grendel" was published on August 12, 1971. Acquired from the estate of Dr. Curtis Carson Holloman Jr. (1939-1991) who served on the English Department faculty at Northwest Mississippi Junior College (now Northwest Mississippi Community College) in Senatobia, Mississippi and whose name and campus address are on the aforementioned mailing label. Holloman's impressive collection of twentieth century American first edition literature included many books signed at events held at the University of Mississippi in Oxford but, as an online search did not reveal any Gardner-attended Ole Miss lectures/symposia, the author's signature may have been obtained in nearby Memphis or New Orleans where Gardner events occurred in 1980.
