Aggiungi al carrelloHardback. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition Thus. 1931. First edition thus (UK edition). [iv], 549pp. Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) was a Norwegian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920. Hamsun's work spans more than 70 years, and he published more than 20 novels, a collection of poetry, some short stories and plays, a travelogue, works of non-fiction and some essays. Vagabonds was originally published in 1927 under the title 'Landstrykere' (Wayfarers), and is the first novel in his 'August' trilogy. The August trilogy is set in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century and follows August, a restless man who finds various ways to make ends meet. It portrays vagabond life and critically discusses modernity, which is an approach that recurs in Hamsun's works. The book is bound in the original black cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. There is light bumping to the corners with a small bit of damage to the cloth on the tip of the top rear corner. The spine ends are bumped and the spine is slightly faded. There is also some fading along the top 1" of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with a name and date (1943) written on the front free endpaper.…

[iv], 441pp. August was originally published in 1930, and is the second novel in his 'August' trilogy. The August trilogy is set in the second half of the 19th century and early 20th century and follows August, a restless man who finds various ways to make ends meet. Twenty years have passed since the action in 'Wayfarers', the first novel in the trilogy, and August has settled in his home village of Polden. August's identity is built on a grand delusion and he lives a good and simple life as a sailor who has just returned from America. August is a man who wants to make changes, improve, and renew everything. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and a little light staining on the boards. There is also some fading around the edges of the boards. The spine ends are bumped and the spine is noticeably sunned and is now brown in colour. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the free endpapers. A name and date (1939) has been written on the front fixed endpaper.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Very Good dj. First American Edition. [good solid book with minimal shelfwear to bottom edge, vintage bookseller's label (Paul Elder & Co., San Francisco) on rear pastedown; jacket a bit edgeworn and lightly soiled, with a handful of tiny nicks and edge-tears]. First American edition of this late work by the great Norwegian writer, recipient of the 1920 Nobel Prize for Literature. It's a continuation of the saga of the title character, introduced in Hamsun's 1927 novel "Wayfarers" (published in America as "Vagabonds"); his next book, "The Road Leads On" (1933), completed what's known as "the Wayfarers trilogy" or "the August trilogy." In this one, August, "the wild and unscrupulous, yet ever generous wanderer, returns after twenty years to his home in northern Norway." Jacketed copies of the American editions of Hamsun's books are surprisingly uncommon. Illustrated by (dj) [Irving] Politzer (illustratore). …
